Hey everyone!

We are sailing on our first ever cruise this October - sailing out of NYC on the Magic. We booked a deluxe inside room on opening day. Lately, I started thinking about upgrading to an ocean view, just so we can have some natural light, as well as hopefully see a few sunrises or sets. I emailed my TA, and she informed me of the availability and their cost. I chose a Cat 9D - and she informed me that this would be a GTY. I had to look it up to see what this entailed, and I am actually pleased that there MAY be a chance of an upgrade to higher category at no cost. Even if we do not get upgraded, the $160 price difference to get two portholes is more than fine more. I am curious about the experiences you guys have had cruising GTY? How late have you gotten your room number? We are doing FE, and I have informed my group about my changes....hopefulllllyyyy I get the stateroom number with enough time to give people a chance to update their lists!
Thanks!

GTY assignments typically show up 45-60 days out from the cruise. That being said, any guarantee booking can be assigned at any time from original booking date all the way up to, and including, embarkation day.

Our first GTY booking we didn't know our room number until we checked in at the port.

Subsequent ones, we've been assigned rooms within 2 days of booking, as well as about 60 days out.

I've only booked a GTY stateroom once and it was my first cruise. I booked a Cat 6B about 45 days out and was assigned a Cat 5C. It was a great room on deck 7 midship. I couldn't ask for a better location. I received my stateroom number less than a week after booking.

Most FE organizers will have some way of communicating room# changes to the group. Often, it's a white board on the organizer's door, or the info is shared at a group meet on the first day.

We booked GTY on our first cruise in 2013 on the Wonder. We booked a 7A GTY, and we were notified about 50 days out of our room assignment. We were happy with the 7A, when we booked as it was a really good deal. Think we paid $2,300 for a 7 day western carribean. We ended up with a 5A, on deck 7.

It was our first cruise and we didn't participate in any FEs. We also didn't know anything about the ships or getting around (besides the published maps). Our second cruise we knew the Wonder, and it was nice to pick our room based on location and deck.

I just wanted to point out that those 9D portholes are tiny, because you are talking about your two portholes. Yes, there are two, but I would say, they are about the size of your head each. If you want to really look out of the porthole and enjoy the view, I would recommend to get a 9C at least.

We have done gty once. Did not get upgraded. Found out room assignments about ten or so days after pif date. Happy with rooms.

our one experience with GTY was similar to this. We were on the Dream deck 5 with a verandah room that was double the size of a normal verandah.

Here's a thread that shows you peoples experiences with GTY. It's usually about 50 days prior. Some get uprraded but not often:

There is also a discount rate that they sometimes do if a cruise is not selling well. This thread explains it. these cabin are assigned just a week or so before a cruise and sometimes not until you arrive at the port.

I was going to say the same as @Flossbolna mentioned above. I agreed the 9D would be an upgrade from the inside cabin, however if the 9C is not that much more, I'd do that.

To answer your question, I've had GTY previously and as mentioned by others, it's usually around the day 40-50ish from sailing range you find out. You will need to log into your reservation and see if the cabin has been assigned there. There were quite a few of us on the inaugural 11 night Norway/Iceland/Scotland that booked day 1 that were in GTY status and we started finding out around the same day and it was like Xmas as we had waited over a year to find out. I was not upgraded and to my knowledge most, if not all, on our sailing for the ocean views were also not upgraded. I did not expect to be upgraded and booked what I was ok with and we had originally booked inside, then after I had made more $$ in overtime, I upgraded to 9C.

If you are on the NYC/Canada cruise (so am I :) ) that cruise has been bonkers too - practically sold out from the beginning, prices went way up (almost doubled for our 7A) and now quite a few people cancelled with the 2017 itineraries. I was showing a lot of availability when I checked yesterday so not sure how this will impact your assignment, if at all. Time will tell :)

Thanks for the concise explanation of when rooms might be assigned.

Mine came up last Thursday at 40 days.

So doesn't seem to be the " typically" thing?

Maybe it's because you're just so special…
