We recently booked and got a category 5 GTY. I'm a bit confused, does this imply that we will be placed in the leftover category 5 rooms that do not sell, in other words the partially obstructed views, etc. ?

Has anyone booked a GTY room, please let me know how it worked out and when to expect to receive a room number.

The obstructed view cat.5 's and 6's were reclassified to cat.7's so you don't have to worry about that. My understanding is that with a gty you usually get your cabin number after the 60 day mark when people have to pay up their balance (and some cancel) if there happened to be no cat.5's available then you would be upgraded to the next available cabin (cat4+)
I may not be totaly right on this but it is they way I think it works...

It could end up as one of the metal bottom verandahs. There is a better chance it won't be one of those, but it could be.

There are 104 Category 5's with a transparent verandah railing and 10 Category 5's with a steel verandah railing, so you have a 9% chance of getting a Category 5 with a steel railing. But you could also get upgraded!

Even if you do get one of the Category 5's with the steel railing, 4 of those 10 staterooms are oversized rooms with oversized verandahs!

I am the "Queen of the Metal Verandahs!!!" My favorite stateroom on the ship is 5650, which has the solid metal and one of the nice, large verandahs that Dave mentioned. It is as far aft as you can get, so it is the most peaceful & quiet spot on the ship. That is a Cat. 6 anyway, so you don't have to worry about any of the Deck 5 aft metal verandahs. But I always love a chance to praise the virtues of those staterooms...a lot of people are leery of them, but what you lose in plexiglass is made up for in verandah size and peacefulness.

We stayed in the category 5 metal verandah staterooms, and loved them! I'll probably be booking them next time. However, beware, you cannot see the water when sitting down, you have to be standing up.

We booked a category 6 room two cruises ago and it came back gty. We ended up with a good room, but we did not find out what the room # was until about 1 week before the cruise, and our documents arrived about 4 days before departure. That part was nerve racking to say the least. We used a local TA and they were no help.(Last time we used them!) Everything worked out fine, but it did take some of the fun out of the pre trip anticipation. Our TA even told us there was a possibility that we could get to the terminal without a room assignment and get one at check in. That didn't happen. I guess the upside of this is that it may increase chances of a last minute free upgrade. We booked a cruise on a special offered through DU, and it was a late booking (about 1 month before the cruise). On that one we were upgraded from cat 11 to 8. So you can always hope that they will have to move you up to cat4. At least that gives you something to hope for.
