Today, I was left in charge of my department at work, a fact that was communicated to everyone 2 weeks ago ... before my bosses left for vacation I cleared it that I would let the area go 2 hrs early today...

So today I'm telling everyone individually of the plan, when I get to this one guy (who I quietly distain).. he informs me "that they decision to leave early will ultimately come from his direct supervisor not me" ... btw his direct supervisor (a man) is the same 'level' as I am.. yet I was put in charge.. not him...

I was left speechless (a hard task!)... he was obviously being a chauvenist & it was obvious from my reaction that he 'got' to me.. not because I'm not assertive but because I was so surprised that he would challenge my authority.. Heck I was telling him he could leave early not that he had to work later!!! I'm in a primarily female work place so really this is the first time I've encountered this kind of thing!!!

At first I felt like an idiot but now I'M MAD!!!! I feel like going back & telling him that because his boss isn't here today & because he doesn't want to take my direction... he'll need to work the full work day!

Thanks for letting me vent...

Don't you hate when someone takes you off guard and you don't have a chance to give them a snappy comeback.

I probably would have paused like you did, regained my composure and then said "Fine, stay all day, what do I care?"

I also would have said something like "well, your "immediate supervisor" isn't here so you will be waiting all day to hear from him" so I guess when the rest of us leave 2 hours early, you will be staying. I would also mention something to his supervisor and your boss privately when they come back.

Well, I have two different opinions.

The first one is, I'm not so sure, from the details you provided, that this had anything to do with the male/female issue. Perhaps he just doesn't like you; perhaps he's afraid of his direct supervisor and won't do anything without his okay; perhaps he's just a jerk in general.

My second opinion is, I would absolutely have told him what you want to. I would calmly look him in the eye, tell him you understand he feels that way, and since his boss is off today and cannot give his approval you are sorry he will have to work the entire day.

He sounds like a jerk. I would let everyone else leave early and if he wants to stay, tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out.

Yes, he is a jerk in general... but unless you are a female with 'model' looks, he doesn't give you the time of day... male/female issue or not, he's still a pig!

ETA: just got off the phone with DH... he was agast that I let a man treat me that way!!!

Tell him he can sit in the parking lot for the final two hours if he wants but that you are locking the the doors two hours early and he will exit the office/building at that time.
