Like my mother....granted...she's going through a very very rough time right now,and I recognize that I'm probably a sounding board...but c'mon....

Tonight, she called to tell me about her trip to DC and how we should take the kids there, because so many of the museums are free, and in her words:

"They'd get so much more out of it than Disney. Why go to Disney and just spend your money? You're jsut wasting your money..."and on and on and on for the next 15 minutes.

Well...because ITS FUN...and my kids will have fond memories of it when they are older.....helllloooooo....we NEVER EVER EVER went anywhere when I was a kid...."cuz we had a pool".....

GGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrr..
Thanks for letting me vent...

LOL...I am sorry I laughed, but I am so glad I am not the only one that gets that lecture!! Don't worry they are just not going to understand at all....Just "yes" her to death like I do, then do what you want. Sad isn't it?

Hugs!

What I get from my MIL, and some of my brothers and sisters is " You're going again????"

With my dad, I have to skirt around the issue of how much it costs to stay onsite. He says you know there are quite a few good hotels just outside the maingate. So, I usually cross my fingers behind my back and tell him that Disney is running a great special and it isn't costing much more to stay onsite.

You know, and the part that galls me about some folk's disdain of repeated Disney trips is ....well....it's just none of their business. And the way they seem to look down on the very IDEA that it's your favorite vacation spot. Like you're stupid, or unimaginative. They have no idea how insulting they are being. I have a friend that goes on lots of different kinds of vacations...Belize, camping on the Hudson....he's the only one of my friends that says ...hey...it's YOUR vacation...do what makes YOU happy!!

I won't grow up, I WON'T grow up...
I don't wanna wear a tie, I don't wanna wear a tie.
Or a serious expression, or a serious expression.
in the middle of July, In the middle of July

Cause growing up is awful-er
than all the awful things that ever were..

I won't grow up, never grow up, never grow up, not me!!

So there!!!

(sorry for the rant!!)

DC??? I prefer the murder rate at WDW!!!

Wow...glad to know I'm not the only one "skirting" the issue about how much a WDW trip costs....
isn't it funny how we never quite grow up in our parent's eyes??

We've never discussed how much we've spent on a WDW (or any other for that matter) vacation with anyone - because it's NONE of their dang business!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a (former) child of a teacher, ALL of our vacations were either camping, educational, or both. My bothers and I still get a good laugh over the ONE time we went to DL as children. Mom took us on the Matterhorn - erroneously thinking it would be educational for us. :D She said, in retrospect, that she should have known it wasn't since there were SO many teens in line.

Any way, we are adults and our partents have NO say on our vacations.

I think every kid should visit Washington, D.C. - and a lot of other places in the world- in addition to WDW! ;)

Well I get something like that from my 2 of my sisters but it is 'cause they want to come too. LOL (Both are in DVC)

We booked a trip for MNSSHP and as of last night both have decided they need to come then too.

You just have to do a better job of picking your parents and older siblings. :)

Well, I get that kind of thing all the time from friends and co-workers...my parents haven't ever said too much about WDW trips, but they get to doggy sit, which they LOVE, so I think that's why;) !

Tell everyone to MYOB!

Yeah,

My side of the family doesn't like Disney and now I don't even mention our vacations to Florida.

On the other hand, my dh's parents ar the ones who got us started going to Orlando in the first place! They are NUTS about disney, are DVC owners, and that is their only vacation spot.

Herc.

Some experience gives me this viewpoint:
DO BOTH!!!
You take the kids to WDW and let your mom later take them to DC. If she has such a strong opinion, she should have the pocketbook to match.
I saw DC for a week as part of a HS senior CloseUp program. Awesome! It was great to see the things I learned about in history and Government classes.
Saw WDW in 1982 just after Epcot opened while I was stationed in Orlando for a Navy School. Loved it!
Saw Disneyland with my bride on our honeymoon. Or at least I think we saw it. There was this one ride with no wait.....;) WOW!!!
My family is now planning a trip to WDW to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. My boys are 5 & 8.
Next, we will possibly visit Yellowstone and/or DC. I would like my sons to see the history of our country before they have to learn about it in classes. It might encourage them in their studies.

All said and done....it is your choice! Those who pocket the expense should have all the say.

DC is very much worth a trip, and *would* be an excellent experience for your kids. And since the museums and monuments are free, it would maybe be inexpensive enough that you could go when you get back from WDW ;)

There's nothing wrong with going to D.C. for the museums. There's hardly anyplace you can find so much in one place, except, maybe, WDW!

So many people think WDW is just another "amusement park," when we know it's not. I used to be frustrated with this until I realized that if I convinced everyone to go to WDW, it would just be more crowded!

I think more people should go to D.C., the beach, the mountains, and all those other nice places and leave WDW for those of us who really appreciate it.
