GRR, sometimes I really HATE people.

I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this type of thing. I am just amazed at how rude some people can be. You don't treat other people like that regardless of what color or race they are. I hope that you can start new and have much better experiences in Florida. Good luck with your big move!

Wow that happened in CA? The land of liberals? That's really shocking. We get a bad rap down in the South... and I don't know anyone who would ever say something like that or that even feels that way in private. Every area is essentially racially diverse here. Maybe that's why?

hummmmmmmm where was this guest from? Do you get this terrible treatment in your local everyday life? I would guess/hope not.

I am so sorry you had to endure this situation and language.

Thanks for all the hugs everyone.

Southern4sure, we are moving to one of three cities, Riverview, Wesley Chapel or Lakeland. Funny story.

Hermosa11 - The lady is from the next town over. The people that live in Walnut Creek are nice for the most part, it really depends on what side you come from, the middle class side, the upper middle class side, or the super affulent side. The later two are the ones I run into problems with.

I'm wicked sorry this happened to you . ... The manager didn't say anything to that guest? She had no right to speak to you like that!!!

Sticks and Stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me! even though they do hurt, don't let that type of guest get you down. Just remember you're a much better person than that guest.

The manager said the lady seems so nice and friendly, and you have to excuse her about the "n" word, she's old, she doesn't know better.

It's not like I have another onsite manager. It's a small hotel, it's 1 manager and 3 employees and we cover all the hours, no one ever even works at the same time, so I have no witness.

My managers manager, and the manager above that manager are both a couple hundred miles away.

We have a hispanic guest services employee as well as she has similar issues with the guest.

The manager and the other employee are white and they never have any issues.

I would like to share a story with you. I've always felt it's important that my 8 yo children understand the issues of racism today. So we read history books a lot and discuss the lives of the people who fought for freedom and equality in our country. We've learned about Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, and why he was assasinated; Harriet Tubman and how she risked her own life to help free 300 other slaves via the Underground Railroad; Rosa Parks; of course MLK; and even Jackie Robinson. I recently bought Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington which I think is a great movie and helps shed light on racism in more modern times.

This morning, my two 8 year olds were off from school in honor of Martin Luther King Day. They came into my bed and we talked about the meaning of this special day. My DD told me the following (I'm not sure it's historically accurate, but she apparently had learned it in school): "in his I Have a Dream speech, MLK said that his dream was that his four little children would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". Sounded about right to me, LOL, but I was impressed that they'd apparently taken it to heart. We talked about what this actually meant, and I have to say at that moment I was very proud of my children. I think that if this is what children are learning today, hopefully the future will be a bit brighter for people of color in our country.

One more thing. I understand the feeling behind your meaning, but in your title you mention the word "hate". Doing so brings yourself down to the level of those who are offensive to you. Forgive them for their ignorance, and keep your heart open and true. For it you will be the better person. :flower3:

Here is a little know fact about the underground railroad. Lancaster County PA was a major stop on the railroad. The Amish did not believe in slavery so they used their farms to hid slaves going north.

Yes that is from his speach and she remembered it correctly too. They played it on the radio today.

I am truely sorry, again for the encounter. I hope you can vent out your emotions here with your DIS family  :chat: and start the next day fresh :flower2: .

Wow - I am so sorry you have to deal with that.

Proof on MLK DAy that we still have a long way to go.

That's My area. If I've not moved to the San FranCisco area (what, are we trading places?) by then, I'd be happy to show you some great places to hang out, eat, shop, etc. If you'd like. ::yes:: :flower3: ::yes::

  I am sorry about the way you are being treated at your job and the outright racism and ignorance of the idiots that have made those comments to you. The only thing I can say is that there are complete narrow-minded bigoted people out there, but don't let them rain on your parade, or affect your self esteem. Hold your head high and remember there are lots of kind and loving people out there to offset all the idiots!

I can understand your frustration to some extent. I live in Hawaii, so as a white person here, I am a minority. The derogatory word here is haole. After living here for a while, I am can empathize with what it is like to have someone look at your skin color and immediately judge and sterotype you. At the same time in some ways I feel fortunate to be the minority here, because it has taught me compassion, understanding and acceptance for people of all races. That said, I decided that I could either let my minority status sink me or rise above it. So what I did is plant myself in the heart of the community, working with and hanging out the locals and then the friendships started coming. I was absolutely blown over by the kindness (and aloha) I've experienced here.

There are lots of good people, kind hearted people out there to offset every ugly one. :flower3: I have a feeling that nasty old woman you run into at your hotel is derogatory to a lot of people she comes in contact with. She has to cut other people down to feel worthy and pump up her very low, low self esteem.

Nobody has to put up with that sort of harassment at work. The are legal guidelines meant to protect us against workplace harassment - and that includes treatment from customers. Your boss should have stepped forward, and in my opinion, contacted the guest and told her under no circumstances was she allowed to address any worker like that at the hotel, and asked her to leave.

Good luck with your job search and potential move to Florida. The greater SF area is really a neat place to reside with, in my opinion, more open minded people (per square foot) than a lot of other places. I hope that you can find an equivalent locale in Florida with a good vibe. :sunny:

I have only been to Riverview to go shopping but I liked what I saw. Wesley Chapel is a nice area and about 10-15 minutes from me, do you have a particular house (area of WC) in mind? I do not know anything about Lakeland except passing through going to WDW.

I hope your day is going better.

One thing -- you said now you have to hate yourself for being black and gay. Please don't. That's part of who you are, and that's great. As far as I'm concerned, I see a very compassionate and sensitive lady -- and that's all good.

i have'nt read the entire thread but i would just say (and this is in no way excusing the behaviours you've encountered) that the area you work in (walnut creek) has a history of being very racist. in the 80's there were some major problems in plesant hill, concord and walnut creek with racialy motivated harrassment that motivated some heavy duty education programs in the schools. for decades it was only custom homes in the area, and then when housing developments went in (the ones that crowd the hills now) they were largly bought up by caucasions who were trying to "escape" from richmond, pittsburg and the like (where they saw high crime and drug use which they associated with "the black influence"). the area has become much more integrated in recent years but there are still major strongholds of very racist people.

that said-i must share that while i am caucasion i encountered THE RUDEST, MOST DEMANDING, DOWN AND OUT NASTIEST people in my life when i worked in a hotel (in the napa valley). it was almost as if their attitude was "i'm paying you good money so i can treat you however i please" (in fact this was actualy said to me on a number of occasions).

i know you are planning to move, hopefully you will find an area of greater tolerance and acceptance.

p.s. i have a number of gay friends who when buying a home completly ruled out central contra costa county as a buying option (even though it would have been much closer to their bsns.) opting to cross over the bridge into vallejo-they shared that they were wary of the discrimination and hostility they had experienced in the area.

Are you seriously buying a house in the city (SF/Bay area in general) in this market? Yikes, I wish you luck.

If you are still around, I'd love to meet with you.
