Groupon hack--a cautionary tale

im not sure why people are so afraid of putting their credit card numbers on the internet. Most credit card policies is that if you can within xx days, dispute it, you arent responsible for it, they cancel ur card, send you a new one and its all done with. A debit card is a different story though. My mom called me last night via citi, i guess she got 3 fraud charges, i told them my mom didnt use her card anywhere in the past 15 days, they said okay, we will investigate... we cancel your card and a new one is coming to you. easy peasy...

Groupon, well, i had a nightmare where one of my groupon didnt send payment to the store so the day we activated our membership, it was automatically cancelled by the vendor the next day. They claim is was due to non-payment. Called groupon, said payment went through... it was headaching... :\

It's more of a hassle than a fear. I'm sick of my accounts getting hacked. I've had this same Visa card cancelled FIVE times in the past year due to theft. Sure, I'm not held responsible for the purchase costs, but I don't have my cc for a week. Two of the five times I was on a trip when I received notification from the bank that someone was using my cc number. I didn't lose the card, but someone got the information off of it. I have a backup card but I like getting my SW points and it's a PITA to have to deal with a cancelled card over and over. I have some auto pay accounts linked to it--St. Jude's, auto renew on my AAA, and my Disneyland annual pass, for instance--that I have to call and inform. Then there are the things like PayPal that need my current number. And now I have to learn a new CCV and expiration date

It makes you realize that none of your information is very secure. I worry about identity theft but people here are right--in today's world, it's just a risk you can't completely mitigate. I'm going to be more careful, though, about saving my information on sites like Groupon. Just because they tell you it's secure doesn't mean that it is.

And just as an aside, there are tons of complaints and horror stories if you Google 'Groupon account hacked'. If the hacker changes your email and password, you can be screwed up for quite a while as you've lost access to your account and they don't keep your old email to reference (or that was true in the past; they may have changed that). If you saved a debit card, you don't have much protection. A lot of times the hackers hit on a Friday night because there is no one manning customer service over the weekend so the stuff is purchased and shipped before Groupon ever knows about it. Often, the police don't take any action, even though they know the address of the thief, since the credit card holder isn't liable for payment; the hackers get away with the theft and so it continues. I do think Groupon has improved, as many of the things I read happened between 2013-2015, but there are definitely some glitches they need to correct, like allowing someone to change your email and password and immediately make large purchases without having to get confirmation from you first about the email change.

I also got Hacked on Groupon a couple months agao. They changed my password and login and I saw it on my email account. When I couldn't get in, I called my CC company and got them to block orders from Groupon. Good news was, I knew the last thing that I ordered and a couple other orders and how many Groupon bucks I had on the account. It took being on hold two hours before I got someone to help me, but he was great. I got my login back and changed my password. They had ordered a pizza deal and I had that reimbursed back to me. I don't use it much, but it was a very convenient having my CC on the account. No more.

Just checked my Groupon account - no stored CC info but my log-in is apparently linked to my Facebook. Don't remember doing that, and don't know if that's better or worse as far as the danger of being hacked.

I read that some people whose accounts were hacked and email changed were still able to log in through FB if they had it linked, so it doesn't sound like a bad idea but I'm not sure.

I just did it. Go to your account then the CC information. You can select None then Done.

I must be blind because I cannot find where I can delete my card ? Am I not in the right area? I signed into iTunes and went to My Account then went to payment section where it said I could make edits.

I'm sorry I don't know. I had to call them, which involves being on hold for a while but I did get it removed.
