Ground was broken this week for Avatarland

I hope your wife doesn't read the Walt Disney World Facebook page in regards to Avatar. :scared1:

I took a peek at that myself this morning. :scared1: Do they normally allow so many negative comments to stay? I'm sort of surprised.

I'm really "eh" about Avatarland. We spend one day at AK each trip. And if more attractions make my wait for EE to diminish, then that's swell. But I don't care one whit about the movie. Just not something I would watch. And part of what I love about the Disney is the connection I feel to the areas done after movies I love. Mostly I'm just disappointed that Disney has done so little with the parks at WDW lately and THAT is where the effort is going? Very disappointing.

I've stopped sharing information on this expansion with others though. Any time I mention it to someone, they swear I must be making it up.

I have no argument that lots of people do not think it is a good idea. I was referring to both the dis and others generally. It actually reminds me of people being outraged that Heath Ledger was selected to play the joker, and then it turned out he did an amazing job. Or any of the million changes facebook has made that have people up in arms for a couple of days until they become familiar and then we wonder how we went without it. When I was a teenager I thought cell phones were a ridiculous waste of money, and now I always have it with me! I would wager that people were also upset when they switched from the E-ticket system to general admission. So for now, I am remaining open minded.

This is very true. I don't care for Avatar but maybe it will be cool. The things I've read so far do seem like it would be interesting.

I too agree that avatar land is probably not going to be a huge draw. Harry Potter is a franchise. Kids grow up reading those books families grew up watching those movies together. Star Wars is a franchise. Star Wars has had staying power since the 1970s . Cars may not be a franchise but families with young kids will re-watch that movie over and over and over again . Every year there are little boys who are still buying lightning McQueen sneakers at Walmart . I haven't seen any little boys wearing avatar sneakers lately . Avatar is not a franchise yet . It remains to be seen if the next movies will be successful. Avatar was out in 2009 & that is a huge amount of time for people to continue to be interested in something. I for one am not excited. I think it's a big mistake.

And by mistake I mean... Won't be successful like HP was at Universal. I doubt it will draw the huge, amazingly huge crowds that HP did.

As you can tell by my post count, I have been on the DIS for years as well. I can not express how sad it is, trip after trip, to witness the constant reduction of services and offerings and increase in price at WDW.
As for the negativity on the DIS? It hasn't changed ONE. SINGLE. BIT. It's been this way since the beginning. People complain. People gush. It's how it's always been and anyone who claims otherwise hasn't been really paying attention. There have been a LOT of changes recently therefore a LOT of things for people to either complain or gush about.

It's a DISCUSSION FORUM. We discuss, for better or for worse. I love's me some Disney World. I don't go anywhere else on vacation (and I can only afford to take a trip, or a single day off from work for that matter, every other year,) and will continue to go to WDW until they price me out. But I can and will continue to discuss what I LOVE about the place and what I really don't like. They aren't perfect. Nothing/nobody is.

As someone who has visited at least once every year (except 2005 and 2001) since 1997, I personally disagree with this. Yes prices have risen, but so have prices for everything so no, I am not going to be that mad at Disney for that. For me, the quality and services have not gotten worse at all. I think they are still top of the line and that is part of the reason why I will keep going back. That's just my opinion on the matter compared to yours, good thing we are each entitled to our own :)

Personally, I think Avatar has about as much of a chance at a successful sequel as Titanic would.

Doesn't mean Avatarland can't be great - it could. It just fully blows that they'd put it at AK which deserves more ANIMAL attractions :(

AK is the least popular of WDW parks, I can't blame them for stepping away from the animal thing. Some people like it but it obvious is not a huge draw so Disney is trying to find new ways to attract people to AK.

For every person who thinks like I do, there is another one who thinks like you do. :flower3:

Because of that I see no reason Disney would consider stopping the price gouging on tickets, rooms and food. Reminds me of the scene in Jurassic Park where the lawyer says "we can charge whatever we want...$1000 a day...$2000, and people will pay it." They have a product they know people want, and they can charge up the wazoo for it and idiots like me will scrape together their pennies to afford it. And if I can't afford it, someone better off will.

I've been going yearly since 1976 (technically I was in utero for that first trip). As long as I can afford it I'll keep going.

Classic addict behavior. :lmao:

I think that generally as we get older and are paying so many bills we recognize the value in a product more and more and become more vocal about it. When we are young, and our parents are footing the bills as well as the vacation bill, everything is very rosy.

That certainly has a way of tempering one's opinion of value, doesn't it?

I personally don't get the whole Avatar thing, but it will be nice for Animal Kingdom to get some new rides. Not thrilled with the theme, but optimistic for the new rides!

How about this, my dad has gone to WDW every year since it first opened. His first trip was two months after MK opened and he has been going back every since. He foots the bills for my family's vacations and owns DVC. He has NO plans to stop going to WDW anytime soon and does not think the value is shrinking. He likes MB and FP+ and thinks WDW is better than ever.

Yes, I know. Now I will just be a kid that agrees with my dad. Whatever it takes to prove me wrong.

I think Avatarland will be cool to look at. I like the idea of using lights, creating night time experience, but think without a good night time show, or fireworks it will be hard for AK to compete as a night park. I have not seen the movie because I never got around to it and then I forgot about it.

If you've seen Pocahantas, FernGully or Dances with Wolves then you have pretty much seen it....just not in 3D with blue aliens. :)

I agree with your first few sentences. I never got around to seeing it because I had already seen Dances with Wolves multiple times and nothing would compare to the original. ;)

Word. LOL

And I'm pretty sure I know the "trying to conceive" forum he's talking about because I was on there for years as well. I can tell you this, there is no forum more negative than a TTC forum. LOL They take the cake on that list.

Gotta love the irony of a mega corporation building and profiting from a theme park addition when the movie is based on a mega corporation brought down by a holistic, grass roots movement.

Maybe it's just me....:)

The single biggest complaint about AK is running out of things to do there, not that they have poor attractions. AK needs more of the kinds of things that make AK appealing to those who DO love it. In the 15 years its been open, there's been very little in the way of expansion. Time for more of what works.

And really, the point of having four distinct parks is to provide four distinct experiences. When all four begin to feel the same, I believe it will be a bad thing.
