Anyone ever deal with a case of ringworm that will not go away???

I discovered a patch of ringworm on my DS11's arm, just above his elbow, in February (the day before we left for WDW!)

They gave him ointment, and we've been using it twice a day since then. It will start to go away, and fade, and then it comes back larger than it started.

We are going back to the doctor today. If the creams don't work, how do they get rid of this?? It is SOOOO gross!!

It doesn't itch or hurt, it's just ugly.

My yds had a terrible time with ringworm there for awhile. As gross as this sounds, it turned out that the neighbors dog had it and he played with that dog EVERY SINGLE DAY. Who would have guessed it can be transferred from the animal to the person...not me!

I bought new sheets, new pillows, washed everything in his room and still I could not get it cleared up. Our next door neighbor happened to be outside one day washing her dog down with med/water combo and we got to talking. Light bulb moment.

Has the doctor checked under the microscope for the fungal infection? I would insist on that for starters.

I am concerned because you said it is not itchy. Ringworm is fungal and generally itchy which may mean that it is not ringworm and why the ointment is not working.

Just a thought. Certainly have it cultured.

Tea tree oil kills fungi, just put some oil on a cotton ball and apply to the area. You can do this in addition to your prescription cream. Also take grapefruit seed extract internally, it is antimicrobal and can help kill and overgrowth of fungi and bacteria. Probiotics internally can also help to balance your body's microbes. If nothing else works, you may need a prescription for Diflucan. For lady-part yeast infections you take one, but for skin yeast and fungal infections you may need to take one pill daily for a week or more.

Also do not use hydrocortisones. While this might help the itch, it causes fungal infections to stop acting like fungal infections and can make them harder to get rid of.

After trying 2 different topical prescriptions, we finally got rid of a patch my son had with an oral medication -- Griseofulvin. Two weeks of that, and it was 80% gone. It continued to fade after we'd completed the medication. Worked well and he had no obvious side effects.

We have a dog...but he is not scratching and has no bald spots. We all touch/play with him, but only DS11 has gotten the crud. How would I know if my dog was the culprit?

The dog in question in our situation was a lab who had been suffering from allergies for several years. When he developed bald spots, the owners assumed it was from that situation and by the time they took him to the vet for his cortisone shot, it was ringworm. I have no idea if it started as ringworm or if the constant scratching of the spots, laying in the dirt etc he developed it. There were obvious areas without hair on his body. They did appear to be 'hot' spots.

My neighbor got it from one of her students. It cleared up when she used an OTC athlete's foot ointment on it.

I've been through this. I was going crazy and bought every OTC fungal preparation there is but this ringworm was too tough. I had to get a prescription for a very powerful anti-fungal cream, Oxistat, that did the trick. We have no dog and my son had no contact with any dogs. I think our problem started with serious athletes foot that spread to his forearm. While my son still had the infection we covered the area with the stretchy top part of a crew sock. I had several of these and washed them regularly. I didn't want him to spread it and bandages were irritating.

The Oxistat was EXPENSIVE, but it worked.
