Gross... warning... infection...

OK,l you've been warned, I don't want to hear any "oh that's so disgusting" complaints now...

DS has bumps on the back of his knees. I knew they were there before (4 months back), but just told him to wash better. The doc wasn't concerned last he saw them either. Fast forward... It's been winter (long pants, sweats etc), the kid is 9 and pretty self-sufficient as far as washing & dressing. I just got a look again as he zipped by in his boxers, they're still there and now one is infected! (about a dime in size, swollen, dark purple, white ctr etc. he says it doesn't hurt) Unfortunately I don't have time to take him to the doctor until Tuesday & I'm positive the doc will shrug, tell us to wash it, keep it clean blah blah blah as he typically does with everything i bring the kids in for. Appealing to the nurses & moms out there, until Tuesday when I can take him over to the doc to get the eye roll from, what is the proper way to clean & take care of something like this... I've been lucky enough never to have had this happen with either myself or my other kids.

Do you mind if I ask what the bumps looked like before? My 3yo has some small bumps on his side and on his arm. Like about 7 total. They're about the size of a zit and that's kindo f what they look like except they're not red. He's had them for several weeks. They're not getting bigger and they don't hurt. But they're also not going away.

I kinda sounds like a boil and staph infection to me. DD had one appear after she got her 5 year shots. I'd call the Dr. and get an appointment. I'm no Dr. but this is what DD's looked like.

ETA: Her's was very sore though.

it could be very mild psorasis. but dont be scared when you hear that word, it clears up with special lotions. my dd6 had it when she was young, put some perscription lotion on her, havent seen it since. she had the same kind of mysterious bumps as well.

I would certainly take him to the doctor and I would hope your doctor would take it seriously!

Your son is suspectible to getting a staph infection with open wounds like that.

Keep it clean. I'd throw some peroxide on it, but there are people who will gasp at that. Bacitracin & a bandaid.

It may not be the same as what the OP's DS has but it sounds like your son has the same thing as my DD on her right shoulder. They look like zits but don't pop and have been there for the past few months. One might go away but then a new one might form. I took her to the doctor last week and she told me it was meluscum(sp?). It's a form of wart that children sometimes get. They go away on their own after a while. They may form on the arm and go down the side of the body. She said you could have them removed but there really wouldn't be a point since they go away on their own.

A child can't spread it to another child but they can spread it to another part of their body. She said's it's nothing major and only becomes a problem if it ends up on the face to which you would then have to see a dermatologist.

I'm sorry I can't help you. Maybe a bug bite? FWIW, I would try to find another pediatrician for my kids. I couldn't stand one that discounted my concerns every time I brought the kids in for something.

This is what I've did. I just second guess myself all the time & think perhaps the bacitracin might worsen it... seems I'd want it to dry out.

I believe this is what the doctor may have thought the bumps were to start with, but never told me what his dx was. I just assumed they were part of the zit family.

At one point I was in total agreement with you and had started searching out new one, but after a few visits to very bad doctors with the kids I realized what a blessing ours was. He's just very cautious with treatments. Like all docs he's had kids with severe conditions and knows when something is bad enough to worry about. Come on, how many doctors call at 7am on a sunday morning to check on the patient because you had brought your child in (and met him at his office on a Saturday afternoon) with an ear infection.

Yes, he has been known to roll his eyes at me, but I attribute it to the fact that he could be looking after some of his patients who are hospitalized instead of an ingrown toenail, sniffles, etc.

He's very good but very careful ... well, let's not get into what he lets his own kids do

If it is Molluscum Contagiosum don't just wait it out. That is stinky. We did and it spread and caused DD all sorts of discomfort, etc. We used Zymaderm and it worked on clearing it. DD got it from her BFF. Children can spread it to others. Google Zymaderm and go to the website, all the info on it and pics are there.

Use Neosporin or Bacitracin... don't worry about letting it "dry out" if it's infected, the pus will keep coming without the antibiotic.

A couple of years ago I had a spot on my ankle that got infected (I think it started as a chigger bite) and I just kept putting alcohol, peroxide, neosporin on it. I ended up going to the doc because it wasn't going away and she gave me some prescription strength neosporin type stuff. I think it was called bactroban. That stuff was magic! My spot went away overnight. I hope your doc can give you something like that and you can get rid of his spot!

Could easily be generic staph or, at worse, MRSA. If its been around for a while, take your child to a real physician.
