Great weather at the fort right now....feels like late spring.
What's the best grocery store (prices and quality) close to the fort?
People mention a new publix and I also see awinn dixie and goodings nearby. Any favorite?

Stay away from Goodings their prices are 3 times higher.

There is a Super Walmart not far. Take Vista Blvd.(the road the fort is on) turn left out of the fort. Take it till the road dead ends at RT 535. Turn right onto 535 and fFollow this road for about 3 miles and the road changes name and becomes Palm Pkwy. go another 2 miles and Super Walmart is on the left. Its 9 miles from the Fort. here is a map

All the grocery stores in the area have a little higher prices to fleece the tourists. Also, the closer to the WDW property, the higher the prices. I agree with the advice to "stay away from Goodings". :woohoo:

That being said, I frequent the Winn Dixie nearest the Fort. Take a left out of the Fort, go to Hwy 535, turn right. At the big Apopka-Vineland Road intersection, turn left. WD is on the right down about a mile. Papa Johns (they deliver to the Fort) is in the same complex.

Wal-Mart is a little further away, a little cheaper, and has a big variety. Head off property on Epcot Center Drive (Hwy 536) to Kissimmee-Vineland Road. Turn right and Wal-Mart is down on the right.

There are a couple Publix nearby. The nearest is past the Outlet mall. Drive out past Downtown Disney to Kissimmee-Vineland Road, turn right and go under I4, turn left onto Vineland Ave, go past the Outlet Mall on the right and Publix will be up around the curve.

There is another Publix on Hwy 192 out the Main Gate to the west of Disney just before Hwy 429 on the left.

Again, all these stores take advantage of their location but they're cheaper than buying supplies at the Meadow Trading Post. Get a shopping list together then go off property. :thumbsup2

We go to Winn Dixie because it's closest to us -- walking distance from our timeshare. If you choose that one, you can sign up for the savings card right at the register when you go to check out. On many items it can save you up to half :goodvibes

I understand that there is now a grocery service that will deliver. Has anyone tried this yet? We are in a motorhome with no tow vehicle, so once we pick up our stuff, we are pretty much at the mercy of the camp store. Milk is the hardest thing to manage for 7 nights.

Randolph,

I know of two types of grocery delivery service (only one major difference). I've never used either one but plenty of folks have on here.

The first is GardenGrocer http://www.gardengrocer.com . You preselect items and they will deliver to the Fort.

The second is WeGoShop http://www.wegoshop.com . Like GG you preselect but what's different is you can tell them WHERE you want your groceries bought since they are a shopping service (Publix, Winn Dixie, Wal-Mart, etc).

I'm sure there are others and you'll want to investigate each one's costs and fees. You'll need to balance the convenience but high prices of the Fort with the quantity and savings of using one of these services.

Finally, if you just need an item or two and don't want to use the Fort or either grocery service, if you have time you can take the bus from the Fort to Downtown Disney and walk through the parking lot across the street to the Hess gas station which carries a surprisingly nice array of grocery and household items at reasonable prices (in between a grocery store and the Fort Trading Post). I was pleasantly surprised (their beer prices were acceptable too).

Have a great trip and :welcome: to the DIS Camping Board :disrocks: .

PS - here I clipped a sat picture for you to show you where it is.

Thanks......We went to what appeared to be a newer Publix north of WDW at 7880 Winter Garden Vineland Rd (535).
It's not very far away, traffic was very light, and there many things on sale that we needed.

Thank you very much for the information. This will help with the planning and hopefully keeping milk in the camper.

Well I just got back from Fort Wilderness and we had a wonderful time. Getting around without a car or without a golf cart is pretty easy with the Disney transportation system (i.e. via foot, bus routes, and boat rides). However if you get craving for having a beer at night....here is word of caution. The price for a six pack of beer at the trading posts (Settlement and/or Meadow) is $15.00 for your basic domestics such as Bud, Bud light, Lite etc. So if that doesn't bother you, you are golden. Otherwise bring your own or hunt for a grocery store like I did. I ended up at a Hess gas station near the Magic Kingdom toll gates and I was able to pick up a 12 pack of Heineken for about $16.00. Yes, I jogged there and later found a short cut (using the Disney roads) which is about a mile from the Fort Wilderness entrance.
