Hello.

When we go to Orlando on 28th July '05 me & 10 others will be in a villa for 2 weeks.

On my last holiday I stayed in hotel & therefore ate out the whole time but this year we will be eating some meals at 'home'.

My question is how much can we expect to pay at the supermarket? Of course most of you wont have been lucky(?) enough to be staying with 1 DF & 9 future in-laws but a general idea would be appreciated. Especially regarding bottle of beer & wine.

Thankyou.

Can't help with question I'm afraid, but hope you have a good holiday with future in-laws :)

I'll start you on this one - with beer costs....

A box of four bottles of Bud or similar US beer shouldn't set you back more than £2 I'd guess - varies, but going rate is about half UK price of £1 a bottle.

Bread, on other hand, always seems much more expensive.....

Great title, something about the word beer drew me in........

Beer is generally cheaper than in the UK - think I paid $3.99 for a pack of 4 Budweiser.

Generally I do the shopping at Publix , because I do the driving - we too always stay in a villa.

Actually we spend a fortune on groceries over the 2 weeks, but the things you have to think about are not necessarily food items.
Bin bags, washing up liquid, toilet roll etc - it can soon mount up, I wouldn't say that Publix was particularly expensive but it is going to cost a few hundred dollars I would have thought, and there are only 3 of us.

The villa we stayed it in March didn't even have any salt - there was nothing hardly, so we had to buy salt, sugar as well as all our food items/ bin bags etc.
If you have room in your suit case I would certainly recommend that you take your own Washing Powder Tablets for instance and take as many toileteries as you can, toothpaste and so on...

We mainly shop at Winn Dixie, and have one of their discount cards which saved us a lot!! We stayed at Woodridge on the 27 so it was closest, but we sometimes go to Publix or Wal-mart.

We spent just over $300 on our last holiday in March for four of us and usually buy things for breakfast, assorted cookies and chips for snacks :) and some ice cream, plus bottled water and pop, rather than any meals as we eat out most of the time. Plus toliet rolls, dishwasher tablets & kitchen rolls etc
Occasionally we buy a cooked chicken and salad, but nothing that takes too much time to prepare. I have enough of cooking at home! ;)

I agree that it's all the 'incidentals', rather than actual meals that seem to bump up the grocery bill, so if we're doing any self-catering on our trips we try to take a few bits with us, such as a couple of bin liners, washing tablets, tumble dryer sheets (make the luggage smell nice too ;) ), etc.

We've found wine to be surprisingly expensive, so we tend to drink more beer and less wine in the US!

We found Bud in WalMart was frighteningly cheap - $12.99 for twenty four cans :earseek:

I think that works out to be about 32p a can?

Much the same as here, if you buy beer in larger quantities it is cheaper. ie 24 cans or bottles is cheaper per bottle than 4.
It works out roughly to be half the UK price, although beer prices in UK supermarkets seem to be less than they used to be, praise the lord! :)

As Hilary says, I have found wine to be more expensive than it is here, but not by much.

Hi. Just got back Sturday. 12 bottles of Bud $8.15 & 12 Busch £6.85 (plus taxes) at Publix.

Rich

....forgot to say - Wine $5.85 a bottle on offer (Californian) at same Supermarket.

weird but its cheaper to buy the beer in 12 packs rather than 24 packs (they call them suitcasses)we usaly go with in laws 6 adults and if yours are like ours stock up on them beers we would go througth 100 beers a day would stock up every 2 days at least
Paulh
when we went to a meal the beer bill was 3 times the food cost ouch

Sorry - difference of opinion here. We took advice from people on these boards and last time didn't take all the basic toiletries (soap, shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, conditioner) with us. We bought them from Publix. They were not only cheaper than at home, but lasted longer. We had so much left in the bottles/tubes after over 2 weeks, that we brought them home again and are still using them.

He he...

We (in the US) call 24 packs of beer "cases", not "suitcases." :p

Thanks for the chuckle!

I work for the world's largest brewer...

They are suitcases if they are in a 'suitcase' pack (24 loose cans with one 'outer' container- has a handle in the top (like a 12 pk does) It is a 'case' if you are buying 4 six packs or 2 12 packs still on the cardboard flat.

I stand corrected, then. I've never heard them called suitcases. Odd. Everyone I know calls 24 packs (when in one carton) a "case." Maybe it's regional?
