Is it possible to get to a grocery store outside WDW by bus? Is it more problem than it is worth?

Yes & Yes. There is the Lynx bus system which services WDW & you can take a bus to a grocery store, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. Here is the link if you want to check out their schedule:

You have some other options.

1. Depending on where you are staying you can walk over to the Hess station near BW or take a bus to DTD & walk across the main road to the Hess. Not a full service grocery store, but cheaper than WDW if you want beverages or convenience items.

2. Take a cab. We usually take a cab from SSR & for $10 plus tip each way we go to Winn Dixie & shop, but again price depends on where you are staying & where you want to shop.

3. Use a grocery service such as Garden Grocer or Wegoshop, both of which get rave reviews here on the DIS.

Depending on your trip, I would consider renting a car. There are several options. Often we will rent at the Orlando airport, stop at a grocery on the way to WDW and drive around grounds for the 24 hour rental period. Return the car on grounds

or

Rent for a day in the middle of a trip, pick-up on grounds and drop on grounds

WE have used Wegoshop.com 5 times in the past and we will be using them again on our upcoming trip. I have been very pleased with the quality of the items and with their service. The cost is the actual cost of the grocery items (no mark up) plus a delivery fee, and of course a tip for the delivery persion., I think the charge was $17 the last trip. We believe we saved that over the cost of shopping on Disney property, and certainly over the cost of a rental car.
I like the fact that I type in my items rather than choosing from a pre-configured list like at Garden Grocer. I name brands and sizes of what I want and I indicate whether I will allow substitutions or not. Marge Peck the owner, even called me from the grocery store to check one time. Wegoshop also gives you a 30 minute delivery window rather than the 2 hour window of Garden Grocer. I think you will find folks here who like each service for different reasons, and I think either would be fine.
We ususally order Breakfast items, juice, coffee, soda, water, beer, wine, fruit, cheese and crackers, and snacks.
Have a Great Trip

We have used GardenGrocer.com and WeGoShop.com, both services were excellent.

This last trip we rented a car for 1 day to head to Kennedy Space Center. We got the rental car for about $35, which might be cheaper than a cab ride if you want to do your shopping yourself.

We found a discount code for the rental car on Mousesavers.com and picked it up at the Dolphin. Very easy and smooth - and cheap!
