Can someone describe the ride Grizzly River Rapids, why exactly do you get so wet (which part of the ride do you get wet), also is there a way to avoid getting wet and does wearing a rain poncho help at all or does the seat of your pants and your shoes get soaked anyway?

GRR is without a doubt my favorite ride at DCA. Last time we went, we rode it 3 times in a row and DH and DD got SOAKED but I was protected under a poncho. I wore a poncho for 2 reasons: 1 being I loooooove my digi camera and would have freaked if it had gotten wet and 2 I am a chubby girl and I didn't want to walk around with wet thighs where they would chafe. Did my feet and bottoms of my pants get wet? Yep, sure did! But my thighs and camera stayed dry! And the place we got the most wet was at the big drop. Especially if the heavier guests go down backwards. Creates a
GI-NORMOUS wave. Have fun and enjoy!! If you don't want to get wet, get a poncho. Is well worth it, even with people chiding you about not getting wet.

We buy several ponchos at the Dollar Store so we can wear them and then give them away or toss them out. They are 2 for $1 there. They only come to your knees, but generally my feet don't really get wet anyway.

Since the rafts float down the river and spin around with the current you never know who will get wet or just how wet you will get. If your side of the raft hits the bottom of the drop first, a wave sometimes will flood over your back. The last time I was on it a geyser popped up right near the end of the ride and landed right on my head. WOW did it dump on me. :rotfl: I was wearing my Mickey poncho (the rest of our group laughs at me for wearing it but man, can you ever get wet without one!) so other than my feet I wasn't too soaked! We always have a blast on GRR! There are lockers at the entrance that are free for the first little while (we have never had to pay but I'm not sure what the time limit is)...we pop our cameras, watches etc. in there to keep them safe while we ride.

We wore ponchos, and as long as they are full length (so you can sit on them), you will keep pretty dry.

The sides of the rafts are open so water splashes in the whole time - it's not like you get inundated, just thast water splashes in all the time.

One ride we did everyone kept dry until the really calm bit after the big drop, and the water just hit at the right angle, came in, and absolutely soaked the couple next to that opening.

It's a great ride and a lot of fun, but unless you enjoy walking around soaking wet, wear a poncho. If you do wear a poncho you'll still get a little wet, but not enough to bother you.

As long as we are on the subject of GRR,can someone tell me if my dd (5 andf 1/2) will be sitting close enough to me to hold my hand, if so she will go and be fine, if not, it may be a problem..... :grouphug:

There are seats that are right beside each other. There are some gaps but you shouldn't have a problem being close enough to hold her hand. :wave2:

thanks, didn't so splash mt. last time because we could not sit without that divider between us. She is fine as long as I can hold her or hold her hand. Then we are brave....

There's a (very bad) photo of my family on one of the rafts here - http://www.ballofdirt.com/media/5333/35629/266879.html

As you can see, the rafts are round, with two blocks of four seats, divided by two entrances, so yes, you can sit together and hold hands! There is a height restriction but given my tiny 5 year old made it, I doubt yours will have a problem.

(BTW, my kids were scared witless by Splash, but though GRR one of the best rides in the 2 parks - it's great fun without being scary)

Cute picture LucyKate ! You can also put your feet on the "center" metal piece instead of the floor, and keep them a little drier, however the best idea is to wear Chacos or Tevas to start with !

We do the disposable ponchos. I hate walking around wet. We just get the disposable ones and they are long enough to sit on, but don't cover your feet. Just put your feet on the center ring and you'll be fine. My BIL didn't wear a poncho and was sitting right next to me and got completely soaked! I don't take anything on the ride with me, I use the free lockers. Albianne (at the top) nearly gave me a heartattack when she mentioned she takes her digicam with her. Even with a poncho, there is a possibility of getting a little, tiny bit wet, but not near as much as you would without a poncho.
