Green Shopping Bags -- Settle an argument for me

Is it proper to use a K-Mart bag in Food Lion?

  • I have bags with store names on them, but I'll take them into whatever store I'm shopping at.

  • I have bags for each stores I shop at. You can't take K-Mart bags into Food Lion.

  • I have generic bags without a store name on them. I'm all set.

  • Plastic, please.

  • Other.

Especially with the shopping cart scanners now, you put your bags in the shopping cart, as you shop you scan the item and pack it in the bag-nice and easy, no need to unload the cart at the end! I can easily seperate the food into bags depending on where in the house it goes- frozen all together, downstairs pantry in one bag- makes unpacking at home SO easy!

OT: I never heard of that. Very cool! However, wouldn't the store be concerned about theft? I would imagine some people stick an extra item or two in a bag without scanning it. If multiple people do that, the profit margin goes down. Maybe I just don't have a lot of faith in people being honest nowadays.

As for the original question. I use my Publix bags everywhere (Target, Walmart, fruit market, Whole Foods, library, etc). I also have a tiny fold up bag I keep in my purse for times like yesterday when I was running into the store to get one item and ended up buying six things.

I've never heard of that! What a wonderful idea. How long have you had this option? That isn't going to hit my neck of the woods any time soon though.

.

About 6 months now they have had these, I LOVE them!!!

They do stop people at random and do a quick audit, pull a thing or two out of the bags and check your receipt against it. It would be easy to stick a thing or two extra in there but no way would I want to be the one with the thing they catch- how embarrassing, I couldn't do that!

Keep buying more and always forget them in the car? Yes, as a matter of fact I do. How did you know?!

hahaha me too!!!! but, I also will bring store named bags into different stores, just not their direct competitor. For instance, I bring a Wegman's (grocery store) bag into my pet food store. I have brought a Publix bag into stores here, we don't have any Publix around (I got it in Fla)

I forgot (I forget a lot of things recently)... I'd rather not reuse any specific store's bag in that store. Especially since I always forget to cut off that little plastic connector, I'm afraid the store won't believe that I'm reusing an older bag and not 'acquiring' a new one.

DH doesn't care, but I'm with whoever's husband who doesn't want to bring a competitor's bag into a store. I recently bought Kroger bags because I was getting self-concious about bringing the Meijer's bags into that store. DH humors me. "A bag is a bag is a bag" is his motto, but he just rolled his eyes when I came home with the Kroger bags. He helped me put the groceries away - that's all that really matters. :)

If I could find a generic canvas bag that had the little tab on the top that goes over the "hitch" that's on the plastic bag holder (and they didn't cost too much), I'd probably change all my store-bought bags over to those.

It seems that, like actually doing the recycling thing at home, reusing these bags depends on how important recycling is to you. You make an effort when it's something you believe in and want to do. Since it's fairly important to me to cut down on my landfill contribution, the recycled bags are always kept in the trunk and I make it a point to remember them when I go into the store. After I put the groceries away at home, the first thing I do is go right back out to the car to put the bags back in the trunk. Always. No excuses.

Every once in awhile DH or I will get our groceries in the plastic bags because, let's face it, they work wonderfully for lining small wastepaper baskets (bathroom and bedroom) and picking up after animals. I'd rather reuse the grocery store plastic bags than buy brand new can liners. But we don't have nearly the amount in my recycle bin that we used to.

It's important to me. That's all that matters. DH doesn't care one way or the other except that he likes being able to fit more groceries into the recycled bags. What everyone else in the store is doing isn't any of our business.

I voted that I use whatever bags wherever. I've used them for years. I've used them before all the stores were using them and cashiers looked at me like I had two heads. If I could survive that, I can survive people thinking I shouldn't use my Trader Joe's bags at Kroger.:flower3:

Did I miss something? Op, what's the argument you're settling? I'm curious!:)

I have two sets of Hannaford bags - the blue set for NH and the purple set for FL (they offer quite a few colors). They are great because they fold up and snap into about a 5"x8" package so it is easier to store them. I put seven of them in a stack with an extra large rubber band and leave them in the trunk of the car. The clerks in FL were fascinated and thought they were a great idea.

My grocery store credits you back money per bag no matter who the bag is from.

My bags are from Walmart. The blue ones and the black ones. I use them everywhere.
