hey there! been on and off the disboards for some time, mostly the teen boards but as i am graduating this year i have a college question. are any you apart of a sorority? Which one? Do you like it? What are the differences of all of them? is it like how it is portrayed in movies? ahaha wow i sound niave but anything will help! thank you

Congrats! Greek Life can be great. Once you decide on your college choice, you can always research the sororities(some are actually called women fraternities) online to see what interests you. The important part is when you go through recruitment to find a group that you click with and form your own opinion. You want to be part of the group and hazing is not an option, these women are going to be your sisters.
Also note that you want a group that is more than the years you are in college. Alumnae groups and their connections are great for job hunting and relocating, plus they still have fun. Yes, I'm active in Greek Life and I'm very happy with my choice.

Hi :) Congrats on graduating. I rushed my Freshman year and joined Delta Delta Delta aka Tri Delta. I go to Towson University in Maryland, and my experiences of being in a sorority are awesome. I love and I am so passionate about Tri Delta. It really does enhance and make your college experience so special. And the movies definitely portray greek life poorly. I mean obviously there are parties and such, but it's not all these slutty girls throwing parties left and right. We actually do care about school and being successful(We are going to college for a reason). Sororities also do philanthropy work(and fundraising) so we are giving back to the community. In Tri Delta we are partners for St. Jude Children Hospital, and our chapter alone raised $21,000 for St. Jude this past year. But all sororities are all similar in that they are based off of sisterhood, social aspects and also philanthropy work. So I definitely encourage looking into it. Just make sure when you are going through Rush it is important to be yourself, and have a connection with the sorority you are looking at. Don't go trying to change yourself to fit in with a certain sorority, because well that is just silly. :thumbsup2 Good luck :) I hope you find what you are looking for. Oh and I'm sure you will hear about Rush on campus. There will be fliers and such up around campus and info sessions etc.

i graduate this june!! and its good to hear that its not a bunch of slutty girls and parties. deffinitley reassuring!! soo good to hear about giving back to the community. what exactly is Rush? thanks so much for all the help btw!!

ps- mini fan girl freak out/stalker moment. i couldn't help but notice you are in the towson MD area and that is were this band that i like, All Time Low, is from. not sure if you have heard of them or not but i had to comment on that.

I'm already in college but for those that are already in sororities, I have a question for y'all. I'm in my first semester and because of family things getting sorted out I did not rush this semester, sadly. However, I will rush next semester but that's only if I have the ability to transfer to a different university as a sister or if it would be better to wait after I transfer to rush. I'm staying my full freshman year in North Carolina, however next fall I will be down in Florida because my dad got a job down there so we're moving back. So I was wondering if I rushed and got a bid from a sorority that they have at my choice school at FL and accept the bid if it's possible to transfer to the chapter down there.

Rush is when you are in the process of checking out sororities with hopes of joining one. You go to "parties" and talk to the girls and hang out and at the end of the week you hope you will get asked to be in one. And yes I have heard of them!

Yes this is correct. If you accept a bid and are initiated into a sorority and end up transferring to a school with the same sorority you can join that chapter. :)

Thank you! Now I can rush next semester and hopefully get a bid to one of the two sororities they have at the school I have my sights set on in FL.

greek life is what you make of it. each sorority has a different reputation at each school. for example, the fraternity delta kappa epsilon at yale is really prestigious and full of rich, good-looking guys, but at my school (cornell), it's considered to be at the bottom. similarly, tridelta (delta delta delta) is considered to be in the middle here, but is tops at syracuse university. you should join whatever house feels right for you.

From personal experience I would suggest waiting until after you transfer to rush. I joined a sorority my freshman year but ended up transferring my sophomore year. The school I transfered to had a chapter of my sorority but it was polar opposite than the one I had been initiated at. I ended up not even affiliating there. If I had waited to rush I 100% would've been in a different sorority. Just remember that every chapter is different and has it's own personality regardless of being the same panhelenic organization.
