Just one more comment from a teacher... for the past 27 years, I have loved teaching, not every minute, but the majority of that time. I teach in the second largest city in MA , one which is on the brink of receivership by the state because it was fiscally mismanaged by the former administrations. As a result, every union in our city is having their contracts nullified by the "board" ( most of which are from the Boston area)which now controls the city finances. The teachers here have not had a contract in three years, no cost of living increases, nothing and unfortunately, many left the city this year to move on to suburban teaching positions, which for the first time, are paying more that our large city. Our health insurance carrier is being dropped to save the city $4.4 million dollars a yr, they say our new carrier will be the same co-pay, same benefits!!! Time will tell.
Trust me - $40. is a big increase when you consider all the other things we have not gotten over the past 3 yrs. They are already asking for us to take a pay cut - wrong!!!
As for supplies- i pay for most of mine out of pocket - over $500,. a yr. I can't remember a time when i haven't.
Sometimes you need to consider the whole story before making judgements. I am seeing both sides here!

And, I just Googled the starting salary of librarians, most of which need a master's. Starting salary ranges from $15,000 to $35,000, dependent on where you live. (Much like teachers.)
