Greater Boston area shooters: Dis Photo outing

Kyle as far as car pooling it would be the best thing to do, there is a parking garage on Hanover st. and is .75 an hour (not like Boston parking) and it's right around the corner from The Portsmouth Brewery which is on 56 Market st. also if you park on the roof of the garage you can get some nice shots of Downtown Portsmouth, also as mentioned before Pierce Island has lots of free parking and might be a good spot to meet and then drive over to New Castle and the lighthouse (about 1 mile) there's also a park and ride off 95 exit 3A on Grafton Drive, but might be harder to do than just driveing into Portsmouth. I will be able to go, I put in for a floating holiday so I won't have to work Friday night. I'm going to pm Puckfly about riding with me because I see he lives near me.
OT a little I was in the area today and decided to stop at the lighthouse, but couldn't find a place to park, so I drove up the road to a little unknow place called Fork Stark (less than a 1/2 mile fromt the lighthouse) here's some pics from today, some shot with the 300mm. 70-200mm and 10-22mm. Anything else I can do to help let me know.
Don

Awesome pictures.
Wish I could join you but will be at Disney then. Maybe next one, my new Canon DSLR is being delivered today, I so can't wait.

Have you given any thought to visiting Portland Head Light? They are open sunrise to sunset just a thought...

The sight just to check it out is:

portlandheadlight.com

I definitely want to do Portland Head Light, but Portland is a lot further drive. May have to do an overnight for that one. There are 2 or 3 other lighthouses up there in that area as well.

PirateMel.... have fun in Disney. If all goes well with this outing we'll definitely do more outings in the area.

You know, if this outing goes well we could even start our photography club and do a once a month outing, and have speakers and such. It's a thought, it could also be very beneficial for newbies like me, and those who can pass their knowledge along.

I would love to but I'll be recovering from a wedding on the night of the 26th while in CT.

Well, the tours start at 1pm. I'm hoping to get up there around 12:30ish. I'll have at least 1 person with me, maybe 2 depending on what we decide do with another buddies car.

Based on Don's info, it might be a good idea to meet up at the garage in Portsmouth then head over to the lighthouse. Maybe try to head out from there by 12:30 to get to the lighthouse early.

I was thinking that we may have some time after the tour and it might be a good time for a late lunch in Portsmouth. Then we can decide based on weather and sun location to either stay in Portsmouth or drive up to York.

We should probably start PM'ing cell phone numbers.

I checked the weather forecast today and was disappointed. So I'll check it again on Wed. Normally 3-4 days out gives the best idea of what the weather pattern will give us.

Nope, doesn't look good at all. I think that if it doesn't change to sunny or at least partly cloudy with nearly zero percent chance of rain, that I will not make it up there. Not worth a 2+hour drive to take pics in the rain.

I'm from NJ so I obviously won't be making it, however we are scheduled to head up to the Westport/Cape Cod area mid-October to visit DH's grandfather. I can't wait to head up, make a stop in Mystic and maybe a detour in Newport to try out the new camera.

Have the leaves started changing up there yet? I know when I lived in CT the change in seasons was more noticable earlier than down here in NJ...I'm hoping there will be some fall foliage left to take pix of when we head up, rather than bare trees and piles of leaves. :goodvibes

The leaves haven't really started changing yet. They look to be starting, but only on certain ornamental trees in peoples yards, not the oak and maple as far as I can tell. Shouldn't be long though. I'm sure by mid-October there will be color up here.

Well, things don't look good for this weekend anywhere along the coast from Maine down to the Cape.

This is from the Manchester, NH channel 9 news station's weather report
"From Friday night into Saturday night the low to our south, along with a tropical wave (right now east of the Bahamas) will approach New England with even more rain (some possibly heavy.) When all is said and done by Sunday AM, between 2 and 4 inches of rain is possible with some spots picking up a bit more"

Not looking to be a good day anywhere around these parts for the kind of photography we had in mind this weekend.

There is one more Open House at the lighthouse this year, Saturday October 11th. I wont be able to make that one, but maybe a bunch of the rest of you might want to check it out.

Other idea's I was having on local photo shoots were: Boston at night (this could break down into 3 different nights over the course of the next few months), Boston around christmas. I saw a calandar recently that had a picture of the public gardens during the holiday season that was real nice.

I would still like to do the lighthouse thing. There is a company that runs tours in the Maine/New Hampshire area during the summers. That is something to think about.

Those who haven't been to Rockport... Great place to go to get that late afternoon light.

We also have SailBoston 2009 in July of '09. This might be an event other people would want to come from long distances for. The last 2 events they had, 1992 and 2000, there were about 150-200 ships (at least it seemed like it was that many). This is definately a worth while event. I got some GREAT pictures during each of the previous 2 SailBoston events. I'm very much looking forward to the '09 event.

As for the leaves changing. Nothing in Mass yet...

Check out this page from Boston's Channel 5:
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/ne-fall-colors/index.html

click on the Peak Colors tab and it gives you a good idea of what to expect where for what time period. It varies from year to year so its just a guideline. I've heard mixed reviews about what to expect for this year.

It's to bad the weather got in the way of this, I was looking foward of meeting and spending the day with everyone. I probadly won't be able to make the Oct. 11 one.
The Boston meet sounds nice, just depends on my nights off.
Granite State Whale Watch does lighthouse tours during the summer, I think they go to 4 lighthouses in the area, one is Nubble Lighthouse, I've gone on there whale watches evey year and have had good luck except for this year because of the weather (rough seas) hard to spot whales but got some pics.
As far as the trees changing color, it's changing fast up here and hope to get some shots this week.
If anyone is ever going to be in the area drop me a PM and maybe we can get together for a few hours.
