I can't remember when I got my Kindle but I have had it a while. I just looked, since January 18, 2010. Today I was showing my friend how easy it was to shop and download a book from Kindle....except the modem wouldn't turn on. I called Amazon, explained the problem and I will have my new Kindle TOMORROW. They emailed a shipping label to return my old one.

I love my Kindle and the service that comes with it.

DD tripped and dropped hers in a puddle in London. We tried rice adn everything else. Nothing worked. We called and exaplined exactly what happened and asked if it was possible to get any sort of a rebuild so as to not have to pay for a fully new one--they said she had only had it 8 months and they would replace it for free. Can I tell you how much I LOVE Amazon:love: I was already a pretty loyal customer--now I am an exceedingly loyal one:goodvibes

The customer service isn't just limited to Kindle. I bought an American Standard mirror. It was really heavy. The knobs were missing and it was too large for the space. They emailed me a mailing label, I sent it back and I was credited with in days. My "Travelocity gnome" tipped over in the grass. A piece broke off of the front. I was definitely annoyed since it was a pricy little trinket to begin with. It was passed the 30 days but it a fit of angst I called Amazon. They credited my account for the amount and told me to keep it.
They have the best prices for things you wouldn't expect. My garbage disposal needed replacing. They aren't cheap anymore. I checked consumer reports and the best one on the market is the Waste King Legend 8000. It is available at Best Buy for $239 plus tax. I got it shipped direct through Amazon for $104 TOTAL!

I LOVE Amazon! Whenever I am looking to buy anything I check Amazon first, and it usually has the best price. Besides that, the one year priority shipping for $79 saves me lots of money.

And I couldn't live without my kindle.

I love their free shipping. Some items I just can't seem to find locally anymore without chasing them down at many stores. Amazon still carries them. I just add them to my list and next time I get a large enough order, I check out. 99% of the time its free shipping -- WITHOUT paying that $79 Priority Shipping membership thingy.

The reviews from customers are a huge plus too if trying to decide on an item.

Neither could my daughter or I:goodvibes Amazing how fast you can become addicted to being able to get English language books pretty much anywhere in the world on very short notice--and to not lugging around a heavy book (or 5) for vacation reading.

I love my Kindle 3, I also got the case with the light.

Sounds like great service. I just hope Amazon UK has as good service as my DH is buying me a Kindle for Christmas.

As an aside, sorry if it's a stupid question but one of the things I like about the kindle is the idea that I can get non-fiction books, particularly recipe books on it. Is it easy enough to skip straight to a certain page in the case of something like a recipe book though or would I have to physically 'read' the whole thing?

Wilma, you'll be able to do a search on your Kindle so you can search for a specific term like "Eggs Benedict" and any mention of those words will be listed in order on the screen. You select the one you want and are taken directly to that page.

If the book has a table of contents you will also be able to choose and go - same for an index if the book has one. There are several ways to find something that don't require reading a whole book.

Some books have an interactive table of contents so you can jump to that chapter.

Otherwise, You can search using the name of the recipe and it should take you there. Also, you can bookmark pages that you want to easily find.

I am an Amazon Prime customers. Sometimes I get my items the next day! I do a ton of shopping on there so it pays off for me. I am trying to get my Christmas shopping done online and I am using an Amazon wish list to keep track of things I may want to buy.

Thank you both - I have been umming and aahing about getting a Kindle for ages and now, after reading loads of reviews, I am very excited to get one. I am going to be a very disappointed girly if it's not in my stocking in Christmas Day ;-)

Wilma, tell your DH to order it as soon as Amazon extends the return period for Kindles bought as holiday gifts. Usually you only have 30 days to return it if there is anything wrong, but last year Amazon let anyone who bought on November 1st or later have until January 31 of the next year (ie an extra month or two depending on purchase date) to return for any reason.

That way you can have it early in case they start to sell out due to high demand and you will still be bale to return it if you need to.

What benefits does Amazon Prime get you? I do most of my gift giving through Amazon since I need to ship things to people. Last year I think I got all but 2 presents on Amazon (I  Cyber Monday!)

For $79 you get free 2-day shipping with no minimum purchase.

So if something is "Prime eligible" and it's $8, there is no shipping cost and you get it in 2-days (sometimes faster!).

And you can upgrade to next day shipping for 3.99 per item. I've done that when we needed something last minute.

You can also add up to 4 Amazon accounts in the same household to Prime. So my hubby and I both have it on our accounts.

And from their website:
You may cancel your membership at any time, and end your Prime benefits immediately. You will receive a full refund of your membership fee if neither you nor your invited household members have used your Prime benefits since we charged you for your current membership period. If you select "Cancel membership," we will tell you whether you qualify for a refund before we ask you to confirm your cancellation.
