Great Movie Ride Update

We still do the hijacking, but the ride is about 60% autospiel now.

That's basically what I was saying above haha I hadn't been on it in ages because it made me fall asleep (and scared me when little) so I noticed there was some narration missing but I wouldn't have been able to give a good estimate of how much. What kind of annoyed me was the lines seemed so choppy. Our CM would begin to speak and you would think she would continue, but it would stop dead after two lines for narration and it just didn't flow. Coupled with the fact the narration was usually hard to hear, it didn't flow that great.

Film clips are very short, can't imagine kids would be scared. The ride itself is on a slow moving tram through animatronic scenes of various movies. Alien can be a little frightening, depending on where you are in the tram.

Your question made me think of a hilarious You tube video, where a cast member is trying to explain the ride to a clueless guest. Think you will enjoy it!!!

Haha, it's both!! One time I was stuck at the same position for a full hour (inside preshow) and was asked 28 times if GMR was a ride!! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

We also get mistaken for the wrong attraction- is this Frozen? Is this a Chinese restaurant? Is this Mulan's temple? My personal favorite was the family that got all the way on the loading dock and came running back out going "we thought this was Fantasmic!" I had a lot of trouble keeping a straight face.

I must say I did enjoy this update though it doesn't really allow the cast members that drive and hijack the vehicle much to do. But I did enjoy that the current version of the ride is more of a 101 Film appreciation course without a test at the end of it. I would like to sit through the estimated 45 minute lecture that Robert Osborne gives in the pre show room about film genres. I thought it was pretty interesting how they connected From the Earth to the Moon to The Thing from another World to Forbidden Planet finally ending at Alien which is seen inside the ride itself.

I've heard that guests aren't to big on Robert Osborne talking during the ride, but I actually appreciated because I felt I got more information about the films that we were going into and I enjoy film history. Though I'm starting to believe that I'm in a bit of a niche. All in all I will say that you get more of an understanding of the films in a fun and exciting way and I believe this is the only attraction that actually teaches you about the history of film. Which the only other attraction that tries to be semi-educational is the Horror Make Up show at Universal Studios, but that is only about the horror genre.

The feedback we've been getting is very mixed. With the new update, the ride feels nicely cohesive- Robert Osborne and his narration is present in the preshow, the script, and the finale, and overall it makes for a solid experience. However, there was no need to reduce the tour guide's role so drastically, and that's the overwhelming consensus we've gotten from guests who've seen the previous version. And it doesn't help that the lines we do say aren't very...well...not so bright. ("I love gangster movies!" "I love this song!" "Woody's here!"- that one in particular I can't say with a straight face!) With some filler and some options on dialogue, I feel like it'll be much better. We've heard they're working on some updates for us, particularly lines for Finale and Casablanca, since they have the longest pauses, especially on the A vehicle.

(Also, is it dumb that I was sad that I wasn't the tour guide in your video? Haha, I just really love finding videos of my show on Youtube. )

She said her lines but she didn't act them out, it was almost as if it was the end of her shift and she didn't want to do it anymore. Plus, you couldn't really understand what she was saying. It was a little disappointing. I was glad it was our 4th fastpass and we didn't wait in the long line for it.

I know exactly which one that is. She's...well, she's hands down the only truly terrible character we have. I probably can't go into details about her, but yeah. Sorry you had her!! Everyone else is great. We have a couple of truly stellar Mugsys/Kates/Kids, but outside of that one particular girl everyone is really good at what they do.

Sheriff Bart's in the montage now? I already liked the general changes happening with this, but that clinches it: I'm definitely a fan of them now. My family doesn't understand why I have Blazing Saddles forever DVR'ed at home, but that movie has me doubling over with laughter about every 5 minutes. It would also be good if they'd add the HedLey Lamarr line: "My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives." But the Slim Pickens reply to that should probably be left out.

I am 33 now, but I vividly remember riding this ride when I was younger, likely around the time MGM opened and I was extremely scared by the Alien scene (not like freaking out or crying but scared enough that I still remember being scared by it over a decade later)

The Gone with the Wind part is my favorite part too!

The script we were given is barebones- no filler and no options like previous scripts. The update was supposed to happen in January, but we didn't start training until May. They changed lines frequently on us during training- they literally changed a whole chunk of dialogue the morning we went live! Believe me, the tour guides are doing our best, but we don't have a lot of leeway.

(Additionally, I just want to say that tour guides only had two days of training, one day with the script and one day on the vehicles, and then had to go back to performing the old script until the update went live. I had three weeks between my training and my actual first show with the new script! This is on top of spring break crowds and a hiring freeze; we couldn't train any new CMs until the updates went live, so we went a good six months without any new cast members. It's been rough!)

The bold is exactly what I was thinking. It really made the cast members sound ridiculous in spots where it worked fine previously. I assume there were things that would straighten out over time, but I do hope some of the script is improved for you all. Even with better timing, I could see some of it being silly. We still had a great time though!

Oh definitely not! I'm always looking for videos of myself after I get done with shifts working outside the haunted house at old town. Its fun to see yourself and improve on the details!
Does anyone think its weird when the audio inside the car switches back to the old show i.e. like in Alien when the voice says something to like of "You are now on the Nostromo"?

I remember when the CMs had more leeway to enjoy the ride with the particular guests in the car. I get the idea of wanting to give everyone a good experience by standardizing some things but really it's more fun for the guests to enjoy the personalities of the CMs. We had one guy on GMR years ago who managed to break character with some of us with the Oz scene and it was awesome! I haven't watched the update video yet so no opinions on it.

I haven't watched all of the new ride, just the end montage. It is different but it was due for some sort of update. I guess I am most disappointed that the first scene is still "broken." I thought they would have updated the audioanimatronics some. It seems like the alien is never working correctly, or at least it used to "jump out" to me when I first saw it as a teen.

BTW on our last trip, I couldn't understand why my sister's kids didn't want to ride, until I took my almost 4 year old on. Between being loud and the gangster scene, she was definetly not a fan and couldn't wait to get off. Maybe earplugs would have helped some.
