Great Movie Ride Closing August 13

Quite honestly I am devastated. The Great Movie ride and the Chinese Theater facade is so iconic. The ride represents what MGM/Hollywood Studios is about; celebrating movies. Sure it needed updating. They should have added some new movies scenes and new new technology. It was a perfect relaxing and enjoyable dark ride. I wish Disney would reconsider this decision. From what I have seen and heard of the new ride, I am not thrilled. Does anyone remember having a lump in their throat entering the park early in the morning at opening, walking towards the Chinese Theater and as you approached you heard classic movie themes such as Tara's Theme from Gone With the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia coming from the park speakers. I cherish those memories.

I made the mistake tonight about telling my 3 girls about the closure. Screams and tears all over. Apparently it is one of the absolute favorite rides of my 10, 8, and 6 year old. Who knew?

I do think it is sad as it is unique and goes to what a "Hollywood studios" is about.

What's going to happen to FastPasses that are after the closure date? I'm just going to keep mine because I am curious what will happen.

I find it odd that its closing August 13, but you can still get a FP for it in September. I was a little upset that I booked a FP for GMR, thinking it would be my last chance to ride it, and now I have to redo my FPs without any good times left for the other top tier rides. I actually decided to move my FPs to MK since there are now only 3 rides I have any interest in at DHS and I'll probably (fingers crossed!) be able to get to 2 of them at EMH and then single rider for RnR. Still didn't get great times at MK, but at least they're worth a little more to me now. Hopefully some earlier times will open up. I can see some people not keeping up with the news and showing up to realize that their FP is for a ride that is no longer open, or at least getting word so late that there aren't any good FP options left.

You'll get an email saying there's been a change in your fast pass for the date you have the ride selected. It'll tell you to select a different fp

I was just ad HS yesterday and did not go on GMR and I had no idea it was closing I wish I know it was closing.

I think it's time for HS to do away with tiers for the time being. There's like 5 attractions open as of August 14, why keep the tiers?

After GMR closes, there will only be four rides, but there are lots of shows that take FP. (Not that you really need a FP for any of them.) Maybe they will start FP on some of the meet and greets?

The thing that I don't like about the GMR closing is what it's being replaced by. The new mickey ride sounds incredibly stupid aside from the "2.5D" technology. The use of 3D without 3D glasses will be cool, but other than that it looks pretty boring so far.

I think the great movie ride is a staple for the park and it would've made way more sense to put it elsewhere

Wow. I had worried about my choice to make DHS a half-day park next trip (Oct), but that's one less attraction there for us. All that's left that interests us is TOT, RnRC and Toy Story. I'm sad to see GMR go.

Yup, I'll probably be there in Sep. I was already leaning towards skipping it (despite that the fact that I'm staying at the Dolphin) but this just confirms it. Definitely skipping. May pop over to ride TSM once but that's it.

"If we remove everything from DHS at once, that will motivate people to buy Park Hoppers!"

GMR was pretty much ruined by the TCM overlay. I sure will miss the concept of having "old Hollywood" represented at DHS though. I look forward to the new ride even though it's sad to know I can't ride GMR again

So sad....it is one of DS's favorites, and he hasn't been to WDW in several years, but we're going in September...a month too late. He doesn't do ToT or RNR, so definitely a half day for us now. It used to be his favorite park...as in we'd go there 5 days in a 7 day trip, with at least 2 days being full days.

Such a iconic ride. I will be sad to see it go. Hopefully, the new ride will be fun and family friendly.

:( I am disappointed. Another ride I will never get to do. Now I am wondering if that makes doing the Star Wars tour an even better option (less attractions for people to spread between, so longer waiting times), or less necessary (fewer people bothering with the park as fewer attractions).

I hate to see it go but GMR has run it's course I feel. The movie update at the end is good and I love the queue but the script and over acting has become tiresome. I think the GMR would last if they could change some scenes out every few years to keep it fresh but oh well.
