TSA to Allow Scissors, Tools on Planes
TSA to Allow Small Scissors and Some Sharp Tools on Planes

WASHINGTON Nov 30, 2005 — Airline passengers will be allowed to carry small scissors and tools onto planes, reversing a rule that led to confiscation of many thousands of sharp objects at airports since the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a Homeland Security Department official said Wednesday.

Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley on Friday will announce changes to the list of items prohibited in carry-on luggage and to the airport screening process, according to the official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because the plan has yet to be announced.

With federal air marshals on planes, bulletproof cockpit doors, armed pilots and 100 percent screening of checked baggage, the threat of a terrorist taking over an airplane has lessened since the 2001 attacks, the official said. The biggest concern now is explosives.

Though the new list of prohibited items hasn't been finalized, certain sharp objects won't be on it, the official said, including scissors less than 4 inches long and wrenches and screwdrivers less than 7 inches long.

Air Transport Association spokesman David Castelveter said the industry has been briefed on the plan and supports it.

"What we believe, as does the TSA, is that we should be focusing on what poses the greatest risk," Castelveter said.

I wanna know when I'll be able to stop having to buy a new lighter every time I fly.

I have given up quite a few P38's over the years 'cause I keep forgetting to take them off my key chain! **sigh**

Personally, I wish they would just keep things the way they are now. No one really needs to be flying with a screw driver and in my opinion it can be used to do lots of bad things in the wrong hands.

I totally agree. Why allow tools such as screwdrivers on a plane? Why would you carry them? No need IMHO.

My mom had a small pair of scissors she would use to cut threads. Had to mail it home. The kicker was she somehow got through Ohare with them. But Omaha said no way.

Last year I was taking my mom to the airport in Denver so she could fly back home to Tucson. My mom has MS and uses a wheelchair so I had a pass to go thru security and down to the gate with her. She had forgotten to pack her small cuticle scissors that she had bought years ago in Spain. They had an inlaid design on the handles and she had had them for awhile. When the TSA folks took them from her, she seriously us leaving the security area and going to the post office at the Denver airport so I could mail the scissors to her.

I knew the scissors were a sentimental reminder of her trip but it is an ordeal to get my mom through security and to the gate. I told mom I would send her lots of new scissors...

Gotta love her :)
