Grandparent of a two year old needs gift suggestions! He's a boy and really into trucks, anything Mickey, tractors, etc. He has a December birthday so I have extra gift trouble.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated! I don't really know the hot toys for two year olds!

My son is 21 months and is now really into Thomas trains, dinosaurs, and cars. He also likes pretend play things like the little people sets. I got him the Weebles Treehouse for Christmas. I think he will like it a lot. His favorite books are the Priddy books with the photos. He most especially likes these two:

He also loves this truck. It is big enough that he and his sister (3 years old) can sit in it and push eachother around.

I'm not a fan of "the latest toys" for kids. Two year olds are pretty simple beings. They respond to simple toys, like blocks, wooden trains, books, and non-automated stuffed animals. Heck, all three of my kids got an empty stove box for at least one holiday!

My son received Dance Star Mickey Mouse for his bday and loves it! He also loves anything with cars or trucks!

Two words- "Thomas" and "trains".:rotfl: Our grandson turned two at the end of August, and he LOVES anything to do with trains, especially Thomas and friends. His favorites are the wooden ones that connect with magnets.

I've always loved the Radio Flyer toys, and when our grandson turned one, we bought him the little sit and scoot trike. He has outgrown that trike, so we bought a bigger one for him this Christmas. Here is a picture of it:

It's the sounds and lights Radio Flyer tricycle, and is built on the frame of the original Radio Flyer trike. It's very sturdy, yet lightweight. This will be his first trike with pedals.:) I think he's really going to like it!

There are turn signals on the front that light up and sound just like the real thing.:)

Our grandson is also in love with Snoopy and Blues Clues. He's getting a big, stuffed Blue dog for Christmas. He also loves puzzles, books and Megablocks.

Really, there are a ton of toys that little boys love! Other favorites of his:
trucks and cars (Melissa and Doug make some wonderful wooden ones)
sandbox and sand toys
bath toys
Play-Doh with cookie cutters
coloring books, crayons, markers (washable!)

Even clothes can be a winner for this age-group. I've never seen my grandson more eager to get dressed than when he knows he gets to wear a shirt that has a picture of Thomas on it!;)

I'm not a big fan of a lot of the electronic "educational" toys for this age group.

Having a child with a December birthday may I suggest you get him something for next summer for his birthday. It was hard when they got all their toys for the year in 1 month and at that developmental age. A 2.5 yr old is different than a new 2 yr old. Some thing he would need as an older 2. Like a small bike or ride on geared more toward a 3 yr old. If you want you can get him something little also on his actual birthday so he does have something right then to play with but come summer when he is to old for all the toys he got in December you will be very much appreciated.

The Thomas the tank wooden trains are wonderful and my DS loved his for years and years. Duplo stuff is also great.

Any toy that makes a lot of noise, isn't that what relatives are supposed to buy?

If you can swing it and if they have room for it, a train table and Thomas set would be a big hit. If his birthday comes first, you could just give him a new train or something and then the big gift at Christmas time. He's so young, he won't know the difference.

I have a 2.9 year old boy and an 18 month old boy. Anything transportation is where you should be looking. Planes, trains and automobiles...in almost any form.

Mine are getting a wooden train set from Santa...I did Melissa and Doug, which is cheaper than Thomas, but the Thomas trains work on their tracks, Mine have a birthday in early Feb and I will probably get them some expansion pieces then...there is a ton of stuff out there if you amazon wooden trains.

They are also getting a push button ride on toy.

Geo Trax sets and Shake and Go cars are also a big hit around here. If you search any of these on Amazon, you can see what they are.

Mine also love the large cardboard blocks for building big towers...but these do take a large space to store.

Another thing they love, is a inflatable jumper or ball pit, but that is definitely dependent on what kind of space they have at home or in a yard...

Thomas was THE hit last Christmas at our house. DS (2 at the time) opened one Thomas pack and didn't care what anything else was under the tree!

Geo Trax by Fisher Price. I started buying them when they first came out for our boys. Still buying them for the 3 year old now. Everyone plays with them and loves creating the tracks.

Toys r Us has the Toy Story one on sale now for 49.99 and the rest of the sets for 25% off.

This year my 2.5 yr old nephew will be getting a Stomp Rocket from me. Just jump on the air pad and send a foam rocket shooting 80 feet in the air. Nephew seems to currently like anything with wheels or any sort of transportation device.

I have purchased other 2 yr olds: Wooden Play food, Play-doh set, Wood blocks, Dot Art (paint that comes in a pen which looks like Bingo markers, easier for small fingers to control), Hand Puppets

When my kids were that age their 2 favorite toys were a ball pit with 3 packs of balls that fit in the playroom and a small size Little Tikes play set with a small swing that sat beside it in the playroom, it looked a lot like the castle set on Amazon. We had a giant Thomas set too but they preferred the other 2 sets to the trains because the tracks always came undone

my son is a december b-day (the 15th) and he's into thomas the train. i think that's only because they share a name ;) those also hurt when you don't see them in the dark!

he also loves his cozy coupe car! santa is bring a swingset, a talking chuck dump truck, super why toys (it's a PBS kids show) and some car's bath toys. oh and a light saber from disney world!

but my son is a little different, he's a HUGE golfer! my husband just built a 4x6 indoor putting green. it takes up my entire den floor  so really, santa doesn't even have to come, the green is enough!

My DS turned 2 in Sept and for Christmas this year- he is a train and truck boy. He is in love with the firetrucks and dump trucks at walmart for $10. I gotta get him one still.... he is getting another geotrax train set anf some Chuggington trains too. And a powerwheels quad with Buzz on it from his Nana. He will be spoiled this year, but I can't resist his saying "sn-ta". Too cute!:santa:

One can never go wrong with Little People Sets. They have airport, barn, house, garage, plus a bunch of other smaller 'car' type sets.

Even though my boys are 6 and 7, they will sometimes still take out the LP sets and play with them (I save all of them, which is good as we are expecting again!)

My son received Dance Star Mickey Mouse for his bday and loves it! He also loves anything with cars or trucks!

My ds is 2.5 and is getting this from Santa for Christmas. He saw this set up at Toys R Us and has made it very clear he wants it so that's his big gift this year. He also is really into trucks as well and is getting a cute barnyard type Little People truck from Fisher Price since he also likes barnyard animals and this has a pig and a cow riding on it. Other than that, my ds LOVES books, balls, Toy Story, and horses so he is pretty easy to please.

Good luck, OP!

I teach 2's, and Thomas is a huge hit. We have a train table in our classroom and all of the kids love it (boys and girls!). Puzzles, art supplies (playdoh, fingerpaint, easel and paints, glue sticks and paper, etc....we have found that parents just don't want to do these type of things with their kids, but developmentally, they really are ready and need this type of activity), wood or foam building blocks.

Another big hit in our room is an older model of the Fisher Price Big Action Garage. I believe that FP may have just come out with a new version of this. The kids LOVE to send hot wheels cars down the ramps. It is played with ALL THE TIME.
