We just got back from some pre-disney shopping and visited Dick's Sporting Goods while we were out. I needed a good sun hat for my 10 yo who hates ball caps, and dh and I decided to check there.
In their fishing and camping section, they had some great hats, and they were all on sale. The S/M fit both boys (10 and 8 yo) quite well. We got a small brimmed safari hat for one and a fishing hat with a neck flap for the other. They were marked $25 and $20, respectively, but rang in at $17.99 less $5.00 and $14.99 less $5.00 - with tax, that was $24.36 - less than the price of the hat we went in to buy.
They are not "cutesy", just plain tan or stone color, but what a price, and something that won't embarass a tween. I can't find a link at their website, but both hats are from Field and Stream.
