Grave blanket on frozen ground

I will be going to the cemetary on Sat. and will be putting a grave blanket on my dads grave. I've been lucky in the past as the ground hasn't been frozen, but this year its been so cold I know the ground will be frozen. I also put pointsetias on other family members graves. Any suggestions on how to make holes in the ground so that the clips for the blanket and the picks of the pointsetias will stay in the ground?

I also had to google it since I didn't know what a grave blanket is. The ground freezes here. Maybe that's why I've never seen one.

Did you google how to attach one to frozen ground? Would the florist have ideas? Or the cemetary caretakers?

As you can see from my location over there <-----------, make sure you can still bring them in when the ground freezes. Usually there is a flower/plant shop near the cemetarys that carry a holder that is placed in the ground with a hammer and the plant sits in it. The idea is that the plant will be removed shortly after being placed.. aka Not permanent.

How big is the headstone? My dm and I put one down at my brother's right after Thanksgiving and we used a hammer for the "spikes" or whatever they are called. But, last week, it looked like it was picked up and moved closer to the stone The ground was frozen and has LOTS of rocks (when we originally put down it had just rained a few days and not too cold).

Anyway, this time I took string and put it around the wood that holds the blanket together and then took the string and strung it around the stone twice and used the gray electrical tape to tape it down behind the stone, where I had tied it. He has a big stone. Would this work for you? I would MOST DEFINATELY look for something to keep it in the ground instead of using those little bendable metal things/spikes.

I have never heard of a grave blanket. What exactly is the purpose? Not being snarky, I really want to understand this.

We put them down for my mother and grandparents. They are small rectangular blankets of evergreens and flowers that lay over the grave. It's like taking a wreath or flowers but this stays for the winter. We tuck pictures in between the branches. I would relate it to leaving flowers, personally.

Bring a hammer and if you have any metal coat hangers that you can cut the ends off of to hold the blanket down, i went last week to my Dads grave and thats what i did, took me awhile but it did work. good luck

I've never heard of them either.. Is this a regional thing? A photo I can see somewhere? Sounds interesting, but I'm shocked that in 61 years this is the first I've heard of such a thing..
