So, we just got granite countertops installed this weekend :cool1:. I instructed DH to go out to Home Depot and buy some granite cleaner b/c I've heard that you need to be finnicky about what you clean it with. He comes back with a kit that the people at HD reccommended. It has a bottle of cleaner, a disinfectant spray, and a polish. I looked at the disinfectant spray bottle, and it seems that the active ingredient is nearly identical to my $2.50 bottle of Lysol all purpose cleaner. I use the Lysol to make my own clorox wipes (just some paper towels soaked in a mixture of water and Lysol). So, am I right in thinking that I can just use my wipes on the counters?? --Katie

I just had granite installed last week. The fabricators care sheet recommends cleaning with liquid dish soap and water. Resealing twice a year.

They specifically discouraged the use of harsh chemicals as they could cloud the granite.

When they installed our granite counters over 3 years ago we were instructed to just use antibacterial liquid dish soap & water to clean them. I've never used anything else on them as I've heard chemicals can be harmful to it and after 3 years they still look awesome.

We have always used simple soap and water to wash our counters. Polish dry when done. We seal once a year. Every thing else is marketing hype. IMO

Oh granite gurus...

DH and I are taking a look at updating our kitchen. Possibly starting with a slight cabinet modification and then counters due to the revised counters.

We have a huge island...and the contractor we talked to suggested we might need to make some reinforcements to the joists and beams that are in the basement.

Did any of you need to have your floor reinforced?

Thanks!!!

do you have it professionally done or do you do it yourself?

We just had granite put in the kitchen and bathrooms. I bought the sealing spray at home depot. I wiped it in like it said, but it had a bit of a sticky residue after using. I let it sit awhile and then wiped it off. I have been using soap & water to clean it.

Windex without ammonia works great. And not all granites need sealed. The darker the stone is, the less likely it will need to be sealed.

I've never cleaned mine with anything other than soap and water. There is no need for special cleaners.

Mine are more than 4 years old at this point, and they look brand new.
