We are planning a trip Dec 2011 and it will be 11 of us, so I'm looking into the grand gathering experiences as we won't be together all the time. The age range will be 1 year - 70 years.
Can anyone tell me about the different grand gathering experiences about Disney World? Thanks for your help!

I am going in June and doing three GGs: Safari Dinner, Illuminations Dinner & Character Breakfast. I will let you know when we get back if you'd like.

My FIL is using a travel agent and the TA told him about them & took care of it. However, I believe it is a special phone number that you call. Our group of 10 are ages 4-70+. I know they are only offered on certain days so it made the which park which day decisions for us. During our stay, the Safari Celebration/AK is on Sun, Illuminations Dinner/Ep is on Mon & the Good Morning Character Breakfast w/ Philharmagic/MK is on Wed. Being that I didn't make the reservations, this is the best I can tell you until my return. I will tell you that we are using the Deluxe DP compliments of FIL & MIL. However, I will try to let you know if I feel each was worth their;) money.

I'll join in on waiting to hear how you liked each of these. We'll be going in Sept/Oct and I am looking at the Safari Celebration and the Epcot Illuminations.

There's not much info on them, and I'm wondering if two table service meals are worth it for each. I can't even find any info on the restaurant used for the Ecpot gathering. :confused3

Have a wonderful time!

I promised I would update on my GG experiences so here it is, but first my disclosures. This was my first trip. I didn't pay for any of it(Thank you DMIL & DFIL!). We were on the Deluxe DP. Due to the timing of our flights, heat, lack of appetite, and bringing our own water, we finished our trip w/ 5 meal credits left and 35 snacks!!! (4 in my family for 5 nights). My family does not dine at 5 star restaurants so my food expectations are not gourmet; however, I appreciate good food. I had read plenty of negative comments was was prepared for cold buffets w/ nasty food. So I was prepared for the worst & hoped for the best.

Animal Kingdom/Dinner Safari: We did this on 6/14. I really enjoyed everything. Make sure you ask a cast member/concierge where you are supposed to meet. "Mama," the hostess, was wonderful. DS10 & DD6 thought she was great. Our safari guide was fantastic. Beware of the duct tape:laughing:, DS is still talking about it. The safari is different from the one during the day. We saw lots of animals. Only the elephants weren't out. The food was good. Rafiki & Timon do not come to the tables for autographs, it is done in a separate room. Be prepared to have the kids and cameraperson get up & move. For us, this was our favorite, the TS credits weren't an issue so it was completely worth it. Had I had to pay cash for this? I probably would do it.

Epcot/Dinner, Illuminations: We did this on 6/15. It is held at the Odyssey: located on the left as you enter WS before Mexico. I enjoyed this too. Roz was funny and embarrassed DMIL:lmao:. My disclosure: I didn't tell anyone that it was their 50th anniversary, DMIL did:rotfl2:. Anyway, the buffet was good. Had a little from many countries. I ate PLENTY. I was delighted at the assortment of cookies, cupcakes, chocolate galore, etc... All look freshly baked. Again, Minnie & Goofy do not come to the tables. However, guests can get in line to have pics and autographs after the dancing. DS loved this interaction w/ Goofy as he had a Goofy shirt on and I mentioned to Goofy that he is DS's favorite. After dessert, all were lead somewhere to view Illuminations. I stopped to use the restroom on the way and the rest of our group went without us:mad:. The 4 of us were then separated from everyone else so we found our own spot to view. So no comment on the preferred viewing. For us, the TS credits weren't an issue so it was worth it. Had I had to pay cash for this, probably not.

Magic Kingdom/Mickey's Philharmagic: We did this on 6/17. It is at Tony's and the food was fine: nothing glamorous (Reason it is only 1 TS?). The sausage was a tad on the spicy side. Personally, I liked it, others in my group did not. I did enjoy it not being a buffet! Daisy, Donald, Goofy & Minnie came to each table. The entertainment is not a big deal (MIL made sure all the kids faced the front so they could see). The big thing for the kids is that they are near the end of the table so that they can get to the characters!! Kids don't care about Tony singing!!! Anyway, finally, I mean FINALLY, Mickey showed up. We were one of the last tables to get to go see him. Yes, for most this is definitely worth the 1 TS. However, for the 4 of us, it was not. The breakfast didn't start until 9:00 and it was our only day in MK. It was after 10:30 by the time we were done and still had to go to the Philharmagic!. Not the start we wanted to our only day. Others in our party had been to MK the previous day (we went to HS) and for them, the later start didn't matter. Oh, the "preferred seating" at the Philharmagic? You receive a pin from Tony that acts as a Fastpass. Of course, the tables before us got to the Philharmagic before us and when we arrived we had to wait because that show had just begun. However, the Philharmagic was a fantastic show.

We also dined together (all 10) at the Princess Storybook breakfast in Epcot. That reservation was made thru regular dining. It included 1 picture for every 4 in your party: we received 3. One of all 10 of us, one of the 4 in my family and one of the 4 in my SIL's family. I have never dined at CRT but I really enjoyed this breakfast as did the 2 princesses in my party. Considering our meal included the photo package, Totally worth every dime. FYI, I have heard that this may go to a 2TS meal in the future.

This is just my opinion. I am sure many will have differing ones. Good luck planning your gatherings. Any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer.

I did the Good Morning breakfast @ Tony's and the Illuminations dinner/dessert in May and I had some different experiences....

Illuminations - our dessert buffet was held outdoors in the preferred viewing spot. The pins they gave out were your entry into that area. Our group of 20 all went at different times over there and I left with DS to go to the bathroom and came back. No problems as long as you had your pin.
I was so stuffed from dinner I had I like one cookie at the dessert buffet but it all looked good!
If you have young kids with you I think this is fun, otherwise most of the entertainment is geared towards them. DS danced with Miniie and is was a real highlight for him.

Tony's Breakfast - I agree, I like that this wasn't a buffet! Good character interaction. I definitely thought this was worth the table credit/money. We got a really nice picture of all 20 of us with Mickey and each family with Mickey too.
Again, the pin they give you is your FP for Philharmagic. You do not HAVE to go see it, or see it at any particular time.

I want to add that they really did up the celebrations at both of these - announcing birthdays and anniversaries (and more than announce them at Illuminations...)

I guess I should clarify our Illumination experience. Due to the questionable weather (turned out to be a beautiful night:)), the desserts were served inside. I understand that they are normally served outside. I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining about the preferred viewing, I just didn't experience it. I am sure it was because of me stopping, getting seperated and it being dark. We did have our pins on. The inlaws all said they enjoyed it. Actually, it worked out. We seemed to be ahead of the crowd and were back to the GF by 9:40.

All three GG experiences made a big "tadoo" about celebrations. That was fun. All three were entertaining. My personal preferences were: #1 Safari Dinner/AK due to the safari/entertainment, less common characters & food. #2 Good Morning Character Breakfast/MK due to the character interaction, NOT a buffet and only 1TS. #3 Illuminations Dinner/Ep due to fewer characters & 2TS. However the food was great and the entertainment was good. If time at MK is an issue and you have already seen the characters, I would rate the breakfast last even though it is only 1TS. I did enjoy all three but all three cannot be #1.

Thanks for the info on those GG's, PixiePlanner and JaimeK! We are going in Sept, and I was thinking of doing Tony's Character Breakfast...not sure now, though, since it doesn't start till 9 and it will be our first day in the park (and the only day for half of our party). The AK Safari sounds really fun! Does anyone know how much it costs OOP?

My family is leaving in one week (woo hoo!!) and we are doing the following:

- Safari dinner
- Fireworks cruise on July 4
- Tony's breakfast

I am looking forward to all of them!! Glad to read everyone's responses about their experiences.

Does anyone know where we meet for the fireworks cruise? It's the one where Peter Pan shows up at the end? I assume for the other ones we show up at Tusker House and Tony's?

The AK Safari sounds really fun! Does anyone know how much it costs OOP?

I believe the cost is about $60 for an adult & $25 for a child but you may want to confirm. Don't forget the 18% tip. It will be added to your bill due to the size of your party.

Loved, Loved, Loved the safari evening. Our tourguide Mitch was so informative and then came to talk to us after dinner. We talked about what he used to do and what brought him to Disney. It was really cool to get his insight. It was a perfect ending to our first day at the World. Hope you like chocolate, the desserts were out of this world.

I assume for the other ones we show up at Tusker House and Tony's?

Yes, you go to Tony's. No, do not go to the Tusker House. You go to an outdoor theater, I believe in Asia but near the bridge to Africa. I can't for the life of me remember the name. Just called my inlaws to confirm. They just asked a cast member and were told where to be.

What time did you need to meet for the Safari? We just booked this for Thurs July 9th and I wanted to try and plan my day around it? How did the timing go?

I believe the start time was 6:30. We arrived at the theatre about 6:15. They give you a sticker to wear and tell you which group you are in: we were Gazelle. I believe the sticker is to show that it is OK to be in the park after it closes. Like I said, don't forget to ask about where to meet.

I hope you enjoy it. DH, DS, DD & I all thought it was wonderful.

Enjoy!

Grand Gatherings was not my favorite thing that Disney has done. Four years ago for our 35th wedding anniversary we took our children, sons in law, grandchildern and sons girlfriend to DW. Thought it would be great to go to the Illuminations Dinner. Not so much. Food was cold. Entertainment was
not so entertaining. We did get to dance. The dessert selection was very nice, but for some reason they moved the Illumination viewing place and I could not see anything but smoke. I love Disney. Never have been disappointed in anything they do,but this was over a $500.00 dinner. We did not spend that $500.00 very wisely.
This is my first time to ever post anything on the internet. Sorry it is a negative comment.
