Can DVC owners booking on points do this if there is eight in the party?

Yes you can do it. Just call MS and tell them you want to have a Grand Gathering number assigned to your reservation. The number will be assigned, and you can then even use GG to make your ADR's rather than going through WDW-DINE. Have fun!

And I highly recommend the Pirates Fireworks Cruise if you can do it. We really had a good time doing that.
