Grand Gatherings? What is it all about?

What exactly constitutes a grand gathering? Is it simply the amount of people? Do we all have to book EVERYTHING together / stay at exactly the same resort. What is the benefit of doing it? I mean, I don't think Disney gives you a group discount or anything do they? I have a friend that wants to "join" us on our vacation. We've had large parties before.. with a bunch of families all booking separately, and meeting up for various things.. sometimes it would have been easier without so many people... so, what's so great about the GG's? and if we don't "sign up" are we missing something? Fill me in.

I'm pretty sure it just has to do with the number of people that will be attending whatever GG event you want to book. For example, for my upcoming trip, we will have 6 adults and 4 children for half of the trip, and only 2 adults and 2 children for the remainder. We all booked seperately, but were told that if we wanted to attend the Good Morning Breakfast at Tony's we still could b/c we will have more than 8 people attending that meal. HTH!

We are also qualifying for a grand gathering but I have found no real benefit to it. We were offered the breakfast, but we didn't want to waste a table credit there. Other than that, I have no idea.
