Grand Floridian the next DVC.....

I am not totally surprised with the GF. I have agreed for years that both the Poly and GF would eventually get a DVC segment. Disney is great at making things work and I am sure the concept that they have for a Poly DVC will work out just fine (I am sure they have one). We can only guess what it might be, but I don't think the size of the buildings, etc will be an issue.

as i see it...height is the issue.

The polynesian is only two story buildings...the longhouse design wouldn't look right with a tower next to it.

Take a look at some early sketches for the Poly. Originally, it was to have a tower flanked by longhouses. You can find some of the drawings on this page.

Of course, with the way things developed, I doubt that there would be room for any kind of tower there now. It would have to be built in the adjacent parking lot, taking away from the already scarce parking.

I wonder what the cost will be?

the costs have already gotten outta control...these will be even higher.

pretty soon the minimum purchase is going to exceed $25000 in up front costs...which is getting kinda ridiculous.

basically...they are pricing what's left of what could be considered the "middle class" outta the thing. Which is their perogative...but that's whats going on.

the myth of the "recovery" is allowing consumer goods like these to increase in price disproportionate to the economic means of the vast majority of society.

since 1980, 80% of all new wealth generated in the United States went to the richest 1% of indiviuals...so yes, wealth redistrubution is a reality - its being redistributed upwards in ridiculous proportions.

My point is that the gap is widening and the vast majority of people (specifically the US...but increasing in pretty much every other country on earth as well) are already being left out of things such as DVC simply because the money isn't available...and the gap is widening.

So long story short...it will be expensive...but that is what is happening on the whole. DVC is escalating from "a good deal" of the 1990s to not so much and more of an exclusive as we move forward.

That may not be a bad thing...but it is what it is.

I can't see attempting to stay at any grand floridian unit more than maybe once or twice as a novelty. I can simply enjoy myself more and get much more value outta the older units. That also includes the restaurants - which the two i've been two in the last year really showed the decline and quality and increase in price that makes them a bad experience - following the pattern that was set forth with the blessed dining plan everywhere else in 2005.

you know...

after looking at the site plan with that filing again...i have to say that the big loser in this one is gonna be the wedding pavilion.

it was never my cup of tea...and when we went to weddings we used a different site...but the one thing i could appreciate about it is that it is kinda quiet and a little less busy there than most of the area around it.

It this is a dvc unit next to it...then that's gonna be destroyed.

Perhaps you'll still preserve the atmosphere inside...but when you leave the doors its gonna be gawk city from the balconies of the DVC unit. and there will be alot more foot and car traffic due to the DVC being plopped where it will be. Probably alot more foot traffic on the path between the poly and grand.

I don't like it for that reason... if they are gonna charge you and arm and a leg for a wedding in a sterilized room...at least don't plop a hotel on it and have swimsuits hanging off the balconies.

Started planning (dreaming) on our first vacation there so hope the rumors turn out to be correct.

When do you think they could start work on it and how long before Disney starts selling the points?

As for price, well if you compare the cheapest room at the Contemporary for $337.50 against the cheapest at the Grand Floridian for $495, then $150 per point seems quite cheap when compared to Bay Lake Towers at $140 a point.

Just because its a reasonable value DOESN'T make it cheap. Look at it this way... I paid far less for my points than $140 so my value at the Contemporary is far better. And someone who has been in from the start, its a bargain.

Doesn't make the current price cheap.

I'm all for DVC (please don't flame me) but I just wish they wouldn't add any more DVC units to the deluxe hotels it increases guest numbers, noise levels, etc., etc., although if they did this like at BLT, i.e. a totally separate environment, then it could work well.

I'm due to stay at the Polynesian later this year, if construction starts this year (and of course we don't know if it is going to be DVC) I might reconsider, I really don't want to stay near a construction site.

Those are the types of comments that make me wish for value rooms at the Deluxe resorts just to really tick off the comment maker.

I worked there (on a temporary assignment) and ...no joke...it had the worst/ most incompetent staff at WDW.

so the allure is a purely fabricated allusion. The real "draw" is that they paint it up as "luxury" and those that fancy themselves as important enough or wealthy enough to pay for it buy it. That's it - plain and simple.

But i agree that a DVC at every "deluxe" (and that term is pretty bogus as well) is a certainty. It's just too good of an economic model not for them to exploit. And they have to make up from the loss of Hannah Montana and for Lindsay Lohan not being able to shoot "Herbie: Fully Loaded 2" due to community service requirements.

And before anybody has the "well...maybe they're just adding on to the grand" - lets just quelch that one.
There is absolutely no need for new rack rate rooms at any disney location with the notable exception of the value suites - pop century.
The last thing on earth that they need with all the economic disasters and uncertainty is more 500 overpriced rooms for the general public.

Now vacation club...particulary because there will be nothing to sell in florida sooner or later makes perfect sense.

so let it be written...so let it be done.

I like the food. Never had a bad meal at V and A, Citricos, or Narcoosee.

Yeah...reading that again and its a tad harsh

The restaurants have always been great...though my last experiences at narcoosees and citricos have been bad.

not the food taste or the service (though service is often questionable and hit or miss)...but the range of choices and price as compared to the food quality has gotten considerably worse.

but that's what disney has done: sacrificed variety and experience for walmarting their supply and building the menus around dining plans.

sad but true

Which is now why some of the best restaurants (Blue Zoo, Il MUlino, Shula's) are NON Disney.

+1

Ate at bluezoo last trip. Best meal I've had on Disney property bar none, including many of Disney's Signatures.
