I would like to try snorkeling in Grand Cayman, but I really am a huge chicken when it comes to the ocean! We are still toying with Stingray City, but even that makes me nervous! Are there any areas to snorkel where you can stay really close to the shore? I definitely do not want to be in deep water far away from the shore. All I really want to do is see some cool fish and take a few underwater pictures. Does anyone know of a place that would be good for me to try? Thanks!

Oops, this is mouseclick1 posting under DS's screen name! Sorry Blink!

I can't tell you sepcifically, maybe someone else on the boards can, but, I just wanted you to know that for a beginner, Grand Cayman is the absolute best. I learned to snorkel there when I was 6 yrs old. The water is clear, warm and usually very calm. There are many beaches with great snorkeling just yards off shore. You can walk out to your waist and start snorkeling there. You will absolutely love it if you are relaxed and go easy if you are a little scared. You will catch on quickly and have the time of your life. Grand Cayman is one of the best places to snorkel on the planet and I say is the absolute best in the caribbean. Have Fun!!

It is beautiful! I dont know if you'd see alot of fish but maybe a sea turtle or a stingray possibly! It would be a good place to get your "sea legs" and not too deep or scary.

The DCL excursion: Shipwreck and Reef snorkel is very good. You snorkel in the harbor in front of the Magic. The water was great there. First stop is a shipwreck and the second stop is at a reef. The tour company provides all the equipment you need. Disney requires that you wear a buoyancy compensator (small life jacket). With just a few puffs of air you float very easily along the surface of the water looking down at all of the sea critters. You are snorkeling off of a pontoon boat in 15 feet or so of water. It's a piece of cake, an easy excursion and you WILL see a lot of neat things!

Thanks for the links and suggestions! Guess I'll have to just toughen up and give snorkeling a try!

Mouseclick1,

I, too, was nervous and had never snorkled before, but I was determined to do it. We took the Disney Grand Cayman excursion with the Shipwreck and snorkling. The captain was VERY patient and explained everything step by step. We were right in the harbor so we could easily see land. The water in Grand Cayman is the saltiest in the world so I don't think you could sink if you tried!

Go for it! I am so glad that I did! You won't regret it.

Did you think the Shipwreck and reef is better than stingray city for a first time snorkeler? Asking because I am a novice and I think I may like stingray city better because you can stand as the water is shallow.

While we are on the snorkeling for chickens subject. Has anyone done the Nautilus and snorkel excursion in Grand Cayman? If so, Is it for first timers?
