We have gone to GC 4 times and we wish they could sail somewhere else. It’s a bland and very expensive port for what you get. The port itself is the standard Diamonds Intl, Tortola Cake shops. I think the catamaran trip is pretty expensive and they only give you lemonade or water, unlike the Fury in Cozumel where they have drinks, etc. We’ve done 4 excursions in GC,and here’s what we did.
1. Rum Point. Kinda OK. Pretty boat ride. First come first serve lounge chairs, and we shared with Carnival and we got there 2nd and there was no lounge chairs for Disney folks. Kinda pretty place with ok beach…not an ideal tropical island at all. The staff was pretty surly to us cruisers, and the lunch was very minimal. They served us a daiquiri or something, and we all swore there was no alcohol in it. They offered to put a shot in for $10…I had a $20, which they accepted and then gave me change in Cayman currency. So…I basically paid $20. What was so insulting was there was a PILE of US bills right there, from everyone buying alcohol and shots, and they said they weren’t allowed to give us back American change. Maybe it’s a law, but they were pretty nasty about it. I got a lecture on “you Americans don’t understand the world is different.” Yeah, whatever. I’m on vacation!
2. City Tour/Turtle Farm: the city tour is pretty boring, but that’s ok. Lots of banks and buildings with blank sides facing the street. The turtle farm is actually a turtle meat slaughterhouse, you get to hold them and interact with them, but then you know they’re just going to be turtle soup.
The gift shop sells cans of turtle meat, so it was kinda…hmm.
3. Sting Ray City: LOVED IT! One of the best days ever. Short too. BUT…the water can be deeper than you think, and it was hard on families with little kids bcs there is a current and they basically were floating and the parents had to hold onto them. I can’t count how many kids I grabbed and pushed back to their parent as they moved around. There is a lot of people, and I’m not at all saying a child would be swept away, but the parents had to hold the kids the whole time, which made it hard for them to pet the stingrays. I did feel VERY safe water wise and stingray wise. But it was kinda a zoo and a lot for kids. Of course, they could always stay on the boat and that would be fun for them too.
4. We stayed on the boat, and we will again this time. We’re a party of 6, all adults who cruise a lot, and no one can think of anything new to do there.
