Looking for one night lodging for a family of 4 in July in or near south rim Grand Canyon. Any suggestions for a nice place with a view not too expensive????

I guess expensive is relative. DH and I were looking for late April and there just aren't a lot of options in the village if you're on a budget. The cheapest we found was $173 a night. Maybe a deal for some, not even close to possible for us. Our trip dates are not finalized yet, but when we go, we will be camping in the Mather campground for $18 a night. The hotels in the village (especially on the rim itself) are just not in the budget and we don't want to have to make the drive from Williams or Flagstaff each day. I'm not a huge camper, but I can handle a real campground with bathrooms. And it's so inexpensive that we will be able to make a big loop and use our national parks pass and visit Arches and possibly Canyonlands and our state parks pass to visit Dead Horse Point and Gobblin Valley on the same trip.

I have the same question. We are looking for one-two nights. I am not expecting 'cheap' but would appreciate reasonable.

If you want to stay ON the rim you have to stay in the national park. We stayed at the Kachina which was the most reasonable, nothing fancy but clean and adequate we had a nice view of the canyon. Woke up to about a dozen elk munching on the front lawn in the morning. Don't know if any of the hotels would have vacancies for this July, we made our reservations a year out. Try to eat dinner at the El Tovar was definately a highlight!
Good Luck

I've been 4 times, will be 5 this June. We always stay right in the parks. Have wanted to stay at El Tovar but pricey and always booked up. We usually stay at Maswick or Yavapai lodges. They both have nice "food courts" and bus transportation on the loop that circles the lodges and the information centers where there are daily activities ie: condor watching and park talks behind Bright Angel lodge. We also woke to 4 or 5 large elk in the early am.
Quite a site!

In 2008 we stayed at The Grand just outside the entrance to the park. No view of the canyon, but a simple 5 minute drive to the edge. The rooms were nice, great theming, and prices were reasonable. We are hoping to go back one day and we would definitely stay at The Grand again.

If you want to stay in the park, inexpensive is relative! Last trip we stayed at Yavapai (sp?) which was in a convenient location.

Check the concessionaire's website (the company that runs the lodging) daily for cancellations.

I recommend reading the Grand Canyon forum on Trip Advisor, too.

check tripadvisor.com for advice...that's what I've been doing! the only 'inexpensive' places in GC are the campgrounds, and even renting a tent cabin there is over 100.00 a night for my dates.....

We stayed at Bright Angel lodge- it was reasonable, and the location is amazing!!!!

We stayed at the Maswick Lodge on the Rim and found the price to be very reasonable compared to other locations in the area. We did consider camping but found the cost to be reasonable enough that we kept our hotel room. The Maswick lodge although not right "on" the Rim is close enough that you are only about a 5-10 minute walk. The room was very clean and neat. They allowed 2 adults and 3 children in a single room with no questions or additional charge.

Thanks got some good feedback here so far....
We are planning a 3 state trip. We thought we would fly into AZ (not sure which airport is best for Grand Canyon yet). Spend s day or two at GC, then drive up to Vegas for a few days then to Los Angeles for the rest of the trip. From what I gathered online the trip from south rim grand canyon to Las Vegas is 5 hours? Then the drive from Vegas to LA is 5 hours? Does anyone know how long it is to drive from South rim GC to LA???
