Grand Californian Room Requests?

I know at DW, people will often call the hotel directly a day or two before check in to request a specific room. Does anyone have experience doing this a GCH? We have a two bedroom suite (NOT thru DVC). Is is possible to see these on a map and are there any that are better located than others?

I would call farther in advance than a day or two. I've usually made requests at least two weeks in advance and the agent has listed them on the reservation. People can check in online starting around 5 days in advance, so I would assume many rooms would already be assigned if you waited until right before your dates.

I don't have experience requesting a specific room, but my general requests (e.g. near elevator) have all worked out.
