Just noticed that the Grand Californian has new room booking categories. The rooms are now split to accommodate "Hearing Accessible with Visual Alarms and Notifications" and "Wheelchair Accessible with Tub and Option for Hearing Accessibility". Were the rooms updated during the pandemic closing?

No, they were always there, but you had to make a phone call to ensure that you were put in an accessibility room. Now, you can get the needed room type when making the reservation. Good news.
We've never needed a room in this category, but I'd be concerned that people who don't need the accessibility will book these rooms just to secure a reservation at VGC since they are hard to come by. Does Disney regulate that in any way?

What do you mean? Are you saying the "Accessible" rooms should only be reserved by those with certain needs? I don't need those rooms and won't book one if a "regular" room is available, but if the "Accessible" room is the only one available, what am I supposed to do?

The way it should work is:
  • If you need an accessible room, you book said room.
  • If you don't need it, you book a standard room.
  • If all standard rooms are filled and there is an accessible room, you would then be given the accessible room. But you should be told that this is what you are booking as not everyone likes the accessible rooms.

This way those that need it have an opportunity, but then those that don't need it aren't needlessly blocked from booking a room because that's all that is left. This how most hotels operate and keeps it fair for everyone.

I was just asking if Disney had a system for prioritizing those who need the rooms. I’m guessing there is some ADA compliance requirements, but I’m new to DVC so I wasn’t sure how it’s been handled before. It seems like adding an online booking option that pops up automatically would make those rooms sell out faster.

Yeah, it used to be that you had to click a checkbox if you wanted to see accessible rooms, now they seem to.pop up with other room types as well.
