Grand Cal, seriously $800 .....

Does JW have a shuttle to and back? How much was parking? New hotel right?
No shuttle but we noticed the Anaheim bus/shuttle picked up right at gardenwalk. Not sure on parking, we ubered to/from the airport. The walk took us 12 minutes and was super easy .7 miles. Brand new hotel and it shows, carpet in the room still felt plush even!

Did you feel safe walking back late/dark? thanks!

I haven't made that walk LATE at night, but I have walked from Garden Walk (Cheesecake Factory) back to my hotel on Harbor after dinner, probably around 9 PM. I found it a little uncomfortable, to tell you the truth. There were the usual homeless & lurkers, as well as a fair number of people coming and going and doing their thing. We didn't feel threatened but definitely uncomfortable. I'm older and petite and I was with my 18-year-old daughter. She got a lot of looks and I was uneasy with the attention. It may not have been a big deal, but I prefer to stay closer to DLR because of the fact that I do feel vulnerable.

I am with you. I feel uncomfortable DRIVING along Katella towards the freeway late at night by myself. It's definitely not the best area, especially the area across the street from Gardenwalk. I think that women, in particular, need to be careful in this area at night. I can see how most men might feel comfortable, but to be transparent, my husband finds it kinda sketchy also, and he is a combat Marine. He has a pretty good spidey sense about places and people. I don't think he would ever agree to stay in this area and walk back and forth.

It didn't use to be like that. My first job out of school was front desk at the Hilton on Harbor. So many
times I would walk with friends (or by myself) to Disney or back late to the hotel. No way in the world I
would do that now. I'm looking for relatives who want to stay very close to walk but not pay for
Disney hotels. Will be around Christmas so I know pickings might be slim . Being local so many times
when we leave I just immediately get on frwy so I haven't really checked out surrounding area lately.

I’m literally laying in bed here now at GCH and I really couldn’t disagree with you more. It really isnt the best or top dollar. If being truthful. Is it nice, yes. But top dollar doesn’t have peeling wallpaper in the bathroom and a super loud pocket sliding door with chips all over it and paper thin walls. We left a top dollar JW Marriott two nights ago, yes a 12 minute walk, but THAT was top dollar…..at literally half the price. All you are paying for here is location. Period. For some that’s worth it and that’s totally fine. We travel a lot and stay at super nice places, so “top dollar” to us is not really this.

You had us at 12min walk. The point isn't to compare to JW or Ritz etc, not only is it location location location, but the grand ness, pool, restaurants, VIEW and than yeah rooms are great too.

Yep sure did, it was my husband and I and there were quite a few people out walking.
as far as homeless folks, we only saw 1 gal one day, and a guy another day but that’s it. None in gardenwalk itself. We’re from Portland so trust me when I say we know what homeless looks like. Nothing to be proud of for sure but we really can gauge what is bad and not. We travel a ton around the country and Portland is by far the worst we’ve seen in the nation. So seeing 2 people is quite literally nothing to us, but everyone has their own comfort zone with it.

I guess that’s why there’s hotels for everyone, rooms weren’t really that great to us. But glad you enjoy them! A 12 minute walk is literally nothing compared to the 9 miles we did in the park!

I was never uncomfortable around homeless people either until my 11 year old autistic child was literally attacked physically by one inside the Macy's in Union Square in San Francisco, a few years ago. My husband had a PTSD flashback and had to consciously stop himself from literally killing the man with his bare hands. Because he froze on the spot, *I* had to remove the man from my son and get him away from us. I never want to be in that kind of situation again. That man was clearly out of his mind on drugs and that kind of unpredictably erratic behavior can come out of nowhere. Up until that point, I would have said homeless people are no big deal and nothing to worry about. I know better now and won't put our family in that environment ever again.

My oldest daughter and I were walking back to Hojo and a guy jumped out from behind a bush and made every effort to scare us to death. He nearly succeeded. He was threatening, yelling, chasing us and obviously not in his right mind. That was probably 12 years ago. When I went to Cheesecake Factory with her little sister as referenced in the above post, it made me realize that I am one who definitely prefers to stay inside the resort bubble. I'm NOT used to that kind of thing and I'm very uncomfortable with the thought of being accosted on the street.

ETA: there are lots of homeless in the area just outside of DLR. While I have sympathy, I don't want to feel threatened, either.

New Anaheim hotels aren't allowed to have dedicated shuttles. There are a few like the Majestic Garden Hotel and Candy Cane Inn that were grandfathered in, but guests at newer hotels are expected to pay to ride ART. My understanding is that there was too much congestion caused by hotel shuttles so the City of Anaheim consolidated the transit into ART and the hotels pay an assessment to fund it. Hotels in adjacent cities like Garden Grove and Buena Park can have shuttles though.

Parking at the JW is $40/day - Valet only
Parking at the Westin is $41.02/day (weird amount, right?)
We were comparing hotels before our DVC waitlist came through to stay at VGC. I have a lot of info in a spreadsheet for them and others!

That’s horrible! I definitely also don’t think homeless people are no big deal and nothing to worry about. But I will add that I saw a couple days ago in DL two men nose to nose screaming at each other right next to me that scared the crap out of me, so crazy erratic behavior comes from everywhere. If I was by myself or just with a child doing a 12 minute walk at night would I do it? Nope. I wouldn’t do that pretty much anywhere though. Sorry your family went thru that, sounds awful.

40 dollars 41 dollars?? I remember when parking was an extra 10 or 15....heck anyone
remember when it was FREE?? It is so annoying. I can have hotels around my house it is
free parking yet the minute your in a radius of Disneyland here come the absurd charges.
I'm surprised they haven't gone to airport parking charging by the hour.

These homeless stories are terrible. Because I zoom out and go straight home I have
never noticed. For some reason I thought I remembered a big police presence along
Harbor/Katella but maybe that was long ago.

"Absurd charges" occurs in most vacation or business locations. Stay in San Francisco? Parking is $45-80 for self parking. LA? The same.

Part of the problem really is there is limited parking spots. Places like Hilton and Marriotts in Anaheim use parking lots not owned by them for parking. And those that do have limited onsite parking use valet services because they can park the cars tighter.

Don't forget NY it is really bad there also. Minimum places for cars. Some hotels were free.
We use to have bdays for my daughter at Disney and her friends would stay at Residence Inn.
For years parking was free. Then 10 then 15. Last i went it was 25 and that was years ago.
I just looked up old receipt for HILTON on harbor. Parking was 10 dollars in 2018. No doubt
it is much more now.

*Dh just got back from business trip in San Fran and the he said parking was I think 57!! But
he usually gets comped with status.
