Whoa...that's so short! I can't imagine us only keeping it 7-8 years unless something tragic happened in our lives but obviously I don't like to think that way. I guess for us it's easy to imagine keeping DVC for 15+ years since my husband and I have been going to Disneyland together since 2004.
So many things can happen, and sure, some of those might lead you to sell. But if these boards are any indication, the more likely thing that could happen in 7-8 yrs is that you decide you want an add-on contract 😂

Oh yeah, I could definitely see us adding another contract if we want to ditch studios or go on more/longer trips. OR...if our son absolutely loves WDW when we finally go.....might have to consider a contract over there. Because, why not?

It's a slippery slope! We mostly go to WDW but fell in love with DL also a couple of years ago so here we are... Luckily I'm pretty good at CC points game so we never pay for flights, which aren't cheap going from NC to CA, lol

You'll have to teach me your ways! We like to drive to CA for summer trips but all WDW trips would have to be winter and we don't like to drive then so flying is a must (and never cheap, it seems.)

We too play the CC game flying from Hawaii to LAX and MCO. I wish there was a timeshare-like program for airfare

There are definitely tricks to save money on a Disney trip.

I’m on my last cash stay next week and just got done calling ahead to use Disney gift cards that I purchased through Target Red Card to pay down a significant part of the balance. I also try and pickup discounted gift cards whenever I can base on posting on the Budget board. (Best Buy occasionally has some $50 for $45 ones). The hotel is about $5k so a 5% discount is $250… that’s real money!

I also plan to use Disney Visa points and gift cards to pay down DVC dues. $8710 in dues, so a 5% discount is $435… that’s also real money!

We also use an Alaska Air companion fare for Hawaii or WDW trips (buy one get one for $120… which probably saves us $760 when flying with 2 kids) and then use the points from that, business trips, and our Chase Sapphire Preferred card to book flights for our Disneyland trips.

It’s all a big game, but of course we spend all of the savings by booking things like Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, Napa Rose, Ama Ama, World of Color desert package…

So, I don’t know if it “saves” money or just helps me justify going premium in other areas…

This. And so many comments in various threads where people say they are planning to buy at VDH to book at 11 and try to get VGC at 7. Tells you everything you need to know about which resort is more valued. VGCs supremacy remains unchallenged.

I don't know what to say when I read those kinds of comments. Of course there's some super stalkers among us who are always sharing last minute availability at VGC, but my gut tells me that the comments are coming from folks who have no idea how difficult it is to book at VGC.

+ THIS! It is all a game. We skirt where we can to justify our splurges. And in essence, a Disney vacation IS one big splurge. I always make my coffee and pack lunches for work. I do most of the house work and repairs. I NEVER go to the movies and don't drink alcohol. I haven't bought new clothes in 5 years. I stopped buying video games. I never buy books and always use the library system. I stopped snowboarding and golfing and surf instead, since waves are free. I have no gym memberships and work out at work. With all the money I think I'm saving, I justify my splurges with TS ADRs, expensive dining packages, and after-hours events.

perhaps people are hoping VGC availability will get better once VDH opens, assuming VGC owners will trade their points to use at VDH?

I would wager that there will be a lot of VGC waitlisting inside of 7m.

Candidly, I’d much rather the room goes to someone who will actually stay there on points than someone else booking it for the purpose of just renting it out.

VGC is a golden goose for west coast DVC SAP owners

I don't get it...how are you saving 5% on your dues??

2. We also use our Chase Sapphire Preferred card to book flights for our Disneyland trips.
1. Does using the Disney Visa save you anything, or does it just get you more points?

2. How do you use the Sapphire for flights? (i just got the sapphire card, but not sure best way to utilize it)

Maybe once? We would fall into that. We own at VGC and Aulani and hope to try out VDH..... once. And realistically I would probably use my Aulani points to try and get it. I think after that- VGC owners will stay at VGC- especially if/when the refurb happens.

1. It depends on if you have a DVC direct discount or various Magic key/annual pass discounts.

If no to the above, then yes it can at certain dining and merchandise locations. ShopDisney is another place where you can get a discount.

2. I have the Sapphire Reserve and it gives me a multiplier when using for travel reward redemptions. You have to run the numbers on what it cost with points through the Chase Total Rewards vs other options.

I recently cobbled together a trip that was a mix of airline points, sapphire points, and booking with Alaska Air credit card for 6 people (in-laws like me to book and they pay me back) and then linked all of the reservations together.

Nah, timeshares cost money. I prefer free!

5% for Disney Gift Cards (DGCs) is the easiest thanks to target as mentioned above. You can always at the least get 5% so why not? But there are better deals to be had. If you make a hobby out of it you can stack a lot of discounts and, say, get about 12K in DGCs at 10-20% discount (that was my total last year, paid for our upcoming ABD trip and all our dues that way). Join us on the Budget Board, the DGCs and more thread 😉

20% discount.!!?? (that's what i'm talking about), how do you get gift cards beyond 5% ?

I will definitely be checking that out.
It's not going to happen, like, tomorrow, but if you can be flexible with spending and hit offers hard throughout the year when they appear, you can make it happen by stacking offers at stores like Best Buy with cashback sites and credit card offers. There are several ways, but it does really help if you churn credit cards as well (a separate thread, same board) as many of the offers come out through stacking credit card deals with store offers or cashback portals.

Thanks...I'll check it out! I love saving money. Even little bits add up!
