I reserved a standard room at the Grand Californian yesterday. I requested a queen + bunk arrangement. I thought this was a great option since DS12 and DD10 are getting too old to sleep together.

At the end of the call, MS asked "Now, how big are the kids?" I explained they are 12 and 10. "No, I mean, are they more than 5'2" or 75 lbs?"

"Uh, not DD, but DS is 5'0" and 85 lbs. Plus, I'm sure he's gonna grow between now and June," I answered.
"Well...then, you really should have 2 queens. The max size we allow in the bunks is 5'2" or 75 lbs," she replied.

I told her that I'll be keeping the request for bunks anyway and we'll cross the people-size/availability bridge when we get to it during check-in next June.

Afterward, I got to thinking. Those height and weight limits seem awfully strange...they just don't fit together. No healthy person who's 5'2" can weigh less than 75 lbs. That's BMI of 13.7...waaaay low.

Does anyone else agree that something seems a little out of whack here? Anyone else encounter these limits? Anyone ever (gasp) exceed the size limits on the bunks?

Please fill me in. Thanks.

I haven't seen the GC bunk beds, but at WL at WDW, our 5' 10", probably 200 pound adult male friend slept in the upper bunk and was fine!

I know that California's building code standards are very strict, but I don't know if that applies to the bunk beds too.

Maybe someone out there who's stayed in a bunk room can answer better?

Here is an option: They have rooms with two queen size beds, with a day bed. Our son was 7yo at the time. They don't have many rooms like this, but they do have them. He had plenty of room. I'm trying to remember where I got that info from.

I stayed in a Bunk Bed room at GC & AKL at WDW.

AKL had standard twin size bunk beds, but CG are considerably smaller.

However, your son will be fine with them. I slept on one while my parents slept in the bed & my son on the top bunk & my daughter on the trundle. I'm 5'7 & 145lbs but don't tell anyone :p. I did have to curl up my legs, but it was fine because that's how I usually sleep. And I wasn't so heavy that I broke the bed  !

I wouldn't worry about it. They may have restrictions, but he is definately small enough to sleep on at least the bottom.

Hope this helps!

I have a reservation for GC next year and the notes say "please keep in mind the bunk beds do have a restriction on the bunk beds that children 6 and over must be under 5 feet 4 inches." We stayed at GC the previous two years and the bunk beds seem like they would be fine for an adult. Maybe a little short. The bunk bed structure seems very sturdy. I assume these restrictions are for insurance purposes. My son is 10 years old, weighs 110 lbs. and is 5' 4" tall. He slept on the top bunk last year and will this year again. I see no problems.

Up at the top, I have a couple of pics of the Disney hotels with a pic of the bunk beds.

When we stayed there ...

I've got a pic of the bunk beds from when we stayed there a couple of years ago. My kids were 12 & 11 at the time, and my son was probably about 5'3" at the time - he had to sleep diagonally to fit. I'm 5', and I fit on there okay. There is a pull out drawer bed under the bunk for a smaller child to use. The staff at the Grand Californian told me that the recommend no one over 11 sleep in the upper bunk.

a few times and I am 5'9 and WAY more than 75 pounds when I did it. I had to curl up my legs but it was fine...

Hello,

I have a quick question about the bunks too.

Does the room appear larger having the bunks instead of 2 queens? I know it won't *be* larger, but having less space taken up, I was wonderig if this would be a good option since we have 2 little ones.

Thanks for any info,

Shanno:bounce: only 4 more "sleeps" til we go!

yes, I think the room does seem larger. You get more floor space, which helps with kids in the room.

We stayed in a bunk bed room with our three kids. The bunk beds are extremely sturdy.....I would have absolutely no qualms about an adult sleeping on them.
