Grammar Rant

Re Prom - my understanding is that it's like going to school or going to college or going to class. It doesn't need an article. If you add the definite article, it means you are talking about a specific prom (or school or college or class).

But you ARE talking about a specific prom! Jane is going to THE prom with Joe. It's a specific event they're going to. Just as if they were going to THE ballgame, to THE dance, or to THE party.

Funny. My brother just messaged me on Facebook and did exactly the same thing. OUR OUR OUR indeed.

But 99.9999% of people when they say "are you going to prom" they mean a specific prom an event involving dancing.

Maybe this one is regional, but "Them are nice" drives me crazy. For instance, someone likes my shoes: them are nice! o_O NO!

As far as posting to social media, I used to point out errors, until I encountered Autocorrect (insert curse words here) on my mobile device. I'm not sure which demonic being came up with that one, but nicely done! Most of my 'corrections' aren't even the ballpark. :sad2:

Will they post boo-cu pitchers while on there trip? Will they try new foods to expand there pallets, or mainly stick to salids?

Eye just don't have the time two let others no how much eye no. Eye also have weigh two many concerns in life than how someone types or speaks there words. If eye can understand what they are trying two say, I'm fine with that. We all make miss steaks. It can be so irritating after someone has red something you post and feels the need to call ewe out for it. It seems like their are those who spend every our of the day looking for grammatical heirs and bringing it to the attention for all to sea.

You can turn auto correct off.

I read a post on FB today that said "I have Aarons to run"

That sounds like an autocorrect- surely someone doesn't think that's how to spell errands. My husband does voice text so it comes up with some doozies. The other day he asked me if I washed his happy socks (heavy socks), and if we had any throat Los Angeles (lozenges).

Those socks will now be known forevermore as happy socks.

It's possible, I didn't think about that.

My coworkers and I wear happy socks every Friday. They are just cute socks with fun prints or stripes and we call them happy socks.

I hate "invites" instead of "invitations."
.
"I got an invite to her graduation." "I'm sending out wedding invites soon."

It's only a few more letters to use the correct word and avoid sounding like the cast of Hee Haw.

I understand auto-correct, but you do have the opportunity to glance over your status before hitting "post".

I have a real-life acquaintance/FB friend who has atrocious spelling and grammar. Sweetest lady EVER.... she would give you the shirt off her back.... but I PHYSICALLY CRINGE when I read her posts. In fact, I often find I can't even understand what she means to say. Sometimes I have to read it out loud a few times to get the meaning! DH says I'm a Grammar Nazi and/or a Grammar Snob.... but I can't help it. Bad grammar and spelling usually just jumps right out at me!! So I understand ALL of the issues mentioned here!........P

ETA: That being said.... I understand that my use of "....." mid-sentence isn't proper grammar.... but I tend to type here the way I talk IRL, with pauses and such for emphasis.

Some of this is grammar and some just word misuse.

I have a fair number of grammar pet peeves, however there are a few word misuses that drive me batty.

1) nobody ever seems to use the word nonplussed correctly. I've stopped using it as I fear people will misinterpret.

2) In my area and on Facebook "happy accident" has been a popular phrase for awhile. It bugs me to no end because people act like it's a new concept. There's been a perfectly good word for "happy accident" for quite some time!
