Graduation speaker-what would you like to hear?

DH was asked to be the speaker at our town's high school graduation. (We graduated from there 20 years ago.) It will be 12 min. long. What kinds of things do you like/dislike hearing at a high school graduation? Do you have any stories of good/bad speakers?

I agree, a little humor goes a long way..............


We just went to an awards ceremony and they mentioned Bernie Madoff and his GREED and the GREED of many people to allow this to be brought about....meanwhile we were CELEBRATING Business awards and scholarships to some HS'ers....It was just OVERKILL and almost sounded like personal agenda, I say be LESS absorbed ad MORE general.

I have been to at least 1 graduation a year and sometimes as many as 4 (high school teacher) Keep it short (I think 12 is a long time) and try to keep it upbeat. Just congratulate them and give them some good words. Maybe visit youtube to get some ideas. Bill Cosby has had some good graduation lines.

My high school graduation speech was great, the speaker never showed up. Honestly, nobody really listens to them, and unless you say something earth shattering, odds are, no one will remember it either. Although the year my sister graduated high school, a radio DJ from one of the really big stations who went to my high school spoke, and he basically insulted all the teachers, and said how he never really liked high school. I would advise not to do that, he never got invited back.

My favorite thing to hear is when the speaker tells the kids they are the future and what they do will effect the future of our world. I know that is said a lot, but its very true and important to have in the kids heads.Also, mention something about it being a cruel world but no matter what you have to keep going and look for a brighter future. Just tell the kids like it is out there, give some encouraging words before they go into the real world.
