This is the first time I have faced this, as our social group is growing up. My DS is a Sophomore and so far I have recieved 8 High School Graduation announcements from friends around the country whom we used to live near and due to moves on one or both parts no longer do, plus some local friends and their kids.

My question is: Am I supposed to send a gift or will a card do. If I send a gift any ideas, this could start to add up. If I send money is a personal check ok? Some of these kids I haven't seen since they were toddlers.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

A graduation card is perfectly acceptable especially if you have not seen these kids since they were toddlers. If you or our family is close to any of the graduates then a gift card from Borders or Barnes and Noble would be good. We have sent personal checks for birthday gifts and such. Just do what makes you feel comfortable.

You can send a gift/money or just a card. Whatever you are comfortable with. Some people send out the invites to friends or relatives that they knew a long time ago just as an announcement so to speak. If you want to send a gift I would probably send a check/gift card for whatever amount you can afford. $10-$20 would be enough.

If you want to send something, a check or gift card is great. It doesn't have to be for much. That is my opinion. I have a senior graduating this year and I really debated about this. There are people that I don't see very often and I want them to see how my S has grown. But I don't want them to think that they have to send him money, he doesn't expect anything. If fact if someone sent him a card just acknowledging his graduation, we would both be happy.

Thanks guys for your input, I got 2 more announcements in the mail yesterday. Following your advice, I am going to send cards to the kids that I have not seen in years, a check to the Nephew and gift cards or checks for the local kids who I know and see regularly along with their parents.

I think the next couple of years could get expensive with Grad presents, maybe I should just start up a fund ;)

Thanks again for your input, I didn't want to seem cheap!

Sounds like a great plan to me.

I just got an announcement from ym cousin who lives 2000 miles away. I have only ever seen him two or three times, ever. My aunt wrote in the card, "no gifts, just a chance to send a picture." I thought it was a great idea - be clear that you are sending the announcement as an announcement, not as a solicitation for gifts.

Money is always a good idea for graduates. One idea I've seen used that was cute was the giver wrote the check out in the amount of the graduation year (so $20.06 for this year). It's cute, will get used, and still only $20.

Money is always the preferred gift of the kids around here (and the amount isn't that important...I usually give more for the kids we are close to). They especially appreciate it if they have a trip to the beach planned or are getting ready to furnish a room in college!!! :thumbsup2
