GPS systems car/boat

DH surprised me today with a GPS system. I've been looking for one for a while, but for our boat. I have no clue when it comes to GPS and things, even though I was looking at them. He got the Magellan Roadmate 6000T. It talks etc. I'm not really interested in it for the road, but more for the water. If anyone knows about this system....can I use it on the water? I don't need all the waypoints and stuff, just a basic. Hey lady...you are here I know the waters pretty well where we are, and what I really want to do is venture out. Will this GPS give me that idea?

For the record...I'm pretty good with a compass and a map and that is what I have been using. Basically, I can find my way out of a paper bag (DH can't)

If you want one for a boat they have so many and they vary in price from cheap to top of the line.

My dad keeps bugging me to get one for our boat. Here is a top of the line from Bass Pro.

My dad uses one and is able to download maps and stuff like that.
