Hi,
I am trying to book a rental car for our trip in Nov. :Pinkbounc and have read that for Aussies, it is cheaper to rent from UK car rental companies as they are "all inclusive".
We also want GPS navigation in our rental car, but are having problems finding a company who can supply it. :confused3

Does anyone know if it is possible to book it from the UK?

Thanks so much

If you're unable to find a company that can get you in-car SatNav it might be an idea to get an iPaq (or equivalent) with TomTom Navigator (or similar product)? Or perhaps the TomTom Go? It would obviously cost you a bit more, but on the other hand you would be able to use the system in any car. Also, lots of websites do deals on the iPaq+TTN combo. I must say I find it absolutely invaluable when driving away from home! I have an iPaq and TomTom Navigator with bluetooth GPS, never had a problem with it.

You can get more info about the TomTom products on http://www.tomtom.com

Anyway, just an idea.

Hi,

You can try http://www.uscarhire.co.uk

They have GPS systems available for hire. I already have a GPS system using my Ipaq which I will be taking over to Florida next month. I'm sure it will prove very handy!!!

Thanks Guys,

Useful info!

From US car hire the rental works out to be AUS$1150 ish and the sat. nav is about AUS$380. The sat. nav seems expensive @ $19 a day extra.

I rekon we could buy a portable to use with the lap top for less than $380!!

I will keep on looking, and thanks for the tips.

Yes, Hertz do it. they cal, it the Never lost nav system.
have a look on their UK web site

Disney 13,
On re-reading US car hire's web site I think they can only deliver the GPS to a UK address before you travel. I have sent them a mail to verify this.

Obi wan,
thanks I will check hertz's web site.

Thanks

I keep intending to take one of the Tomtoms (we have TTN3 with a PDA, and TTGO) but every time we go to Orlando the US maps are "coming soon" on the Tomtom website :(

Last October, I uninstalled TTN3 and installed TTN2.24 (US edition), which appeared to be all but identical to the UK TTN3 version.

Im not sure what the current situation is regarding maps, Im pretty sure they are now availablefor TTN3 (someone on here told me the were). I am now running TomTom5 on my new phone - which means I can sell my IPAQ2210 with TomTom3 (and 5) and all the GPS, car kit etc.

Ive used Tomtom for a while now and am also planning upon taking it to Florida with me too. Just got to get the US maps off their website I think.

I use it on my phone and as Tomtom is now available for several smartphone models, it's worth checking as it seems certainly cheaper than having GPS as a rental option and its also something which can be used when you get home.

I know several people who have Tomtom Go and rave about it so if you havent got a smartphone and dont need a PDA, its an excellent option.

Am I being stupid? but I can't see any consumer protection.... what exactly do they have? :)

Update from me...I now have the Florida (and the rest of the USA) maps for TomTom5, running on my XDAIii.

Where did you buy the maps? I can't find them on the Tomtom site.

Erm... < cough > I'd rather not say.

Well I did search but couldn't find anything. It's not like I'm trying to avoid buying a licence -- I want to buy a licence for a product that Tomtom is already selling (it's on the US-supplied TTGOs). But they're not selling to the EU for some reason

Oh right, so the bond is directly with the supplier! So how much is the bond for? I too lost money when go car hire went bust! They also had a bond with their suppliers but the bond was only £50,000.00 so only covered the first 130 people, the rest of us were stuck.
