Governor Requests School Closings

Governor Sonny Perdue has announced that he has requested that all the state's school systems take an "early snow day" and close on Monday and Tuesday of next week in a fuel saving measure as a result of Hurricane Rita.

"Any supply squeeze is temporary, and is nothing we can't handle," Perdue said.

Perdue also has signed an executive order that eliminates non-essential travel by state employees.

Perdue's office is also encouraging telecommuting and alternative scheduling by non-essential state offices in order to save on fuel costs.

If all of Georgia's schools close, the governor estimated about 250,000 gallons of diesel fuel would be saved each day by keeping buses off the road.

The governor also said an undetermined amount of regular gasoline also would be saved by allowing teachers, other school staff members and some parents to stay home those days. Electricity also would be conserved by keeping the schools closed.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has announced that all of their schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday in accordance with the governor's request.

Gas may be short this weekend, which is why I filed up today to make sure we can get to MGM tomorrow

And on the news it is showing, as some people predicted, that his request has panicked people and there are lines to fill up again.

It is reasonable for families not to cancel or change their previously scheduled Disney vacations to allow kids to attend made up snow days rescheduled onto school vacation periods.

Furthermore, if the school has not formally accepted the family's vacation plans (the situation is still tenuous and possibly adversarial) the kids should not attend a partial day of school on the day of departure intending to be picked up for the airport mid-day.

Snow days are not made up during vacation weeks. There are built-in days off here and there that are called snow days, and if the school doesn't close for snow, they will be out those days. I would never plan a vacation on a snow make-up day, as there will likely be school on those days. It's very unusual to go through a whole school year without the school closing for *something* although now if there is snow this winter, they may run out of snow days. I don't know how many they build into the schedule in GA. Ours are a Monday in April and a Monday in May,and I think there's one more. We've never had them interfere with fall, winter, or spring break.

It does seem a bit odd though. Are they really that short of fuel? We were a couple of weeks ago...our school system only had enough left for one more week, but obviously their tanker showed up.

Bingo! The quickest way to trigger a panic is to predict a shortage. It's just like the best way to trigger a bank run is to tell people "hold off withdrawing any money for a couple of days because the bank is a little short on cash reserves at the moment."

I bet the kids in GA are happy! Man in Chicago we'd be praying they'd close for snow and some days it would snow and snow and they woudln't close!

DS is already mad about this. He thinks it's unfair because we're right next to Rita and the least thing they can do is cancel school for one day. ;)

Lot of schools thru Tx are now closed thru Tuesday including ours. We have a severe gas shortage in Houston.
I will never understand people that rush out to get gas either from panic or from worry that the price is going to go up. They are going to have to pay the higher price the next week. :confused3

The high prices are not caused by the panic or rush to get gas. You need to take a look at the Greedy *** oil companies. You know, if it didn't cause an economic breakdown, I'd hope for each and every oil company to some how be distroyed by a natural disaster.

Now what is there that you don't understand about people trying to save money? :confused3
