Government Shutdown and Disney Fund

Did she say anything about full refunds for people pass the 45 day mark?

She said that I would still loose the $200.00 deposit, which I knew and I was willing to do. She didn't say, but they may make an exception once the time gets closer, but I really have no idea.

Lucky for me I had a yard sale today and made enough to pay off our trip with out having to use any of our house hold funds, or emergency fund. That was key to us going for my DH. He wouldn't put our family at risk for one week at Disney. He will never use savings or other accounts for nonessential things. He will not let me use credit cards under any circumstance either. He's a real tightwad sometimes. :headache: So, since I have done this on my own, I can relax as far as the trip goes, but I still hope that we can make this through the shut down without touching savings.

Most of government really isn't needed. We have become very dependent on the federal government for almost everything.

I'm not saying what you do isn't meaning full to you or to others.

I hope they resolve this budget debate soon.

We all will be hurt if they take this into the default stage. I'm not holding my breath. I really think they will take this to the end.

Here is my question the players involved where elected to do what the people in their district want right ? And they have the support poll wise is huge for what they are doing.

Even if you don't agree.

Are you suggesting big business should be solely responsible for the safety of our food supply or safety at our borders (I know that there are contractors that are hired to do this but it is the responsibility of and under the control of the Feds)

There are many that are doing what they think the people that they represent want. But there are a few that are doing what they believe is the "popular" thing with their respective Party and don't want to cross the line because following the Party line is good for them, not necessarily the good of the country.

I just got a call, two actually, an email and a text. I'm back at work tomorrow.:goodvibes

We fall under the DOD bill, but not directly DOD. I'm part of the IC and it's a support to DOD issue.

Lucky you.... (sincerely!)

I'm DoT.... still at home!

Wait, you mean Government isn't "big business" Funny, it often seems that way. ;)

They can't not pay themselves - and isn't that convenient!- but they can give it back. No pass from me on this mess. I get that each side firmly believes they're in the right. But there has to be compromise, not just posturing to show who wields the biggest stick.

And I loved the post about locking them all in a room until they agree.

It has to do with the 27th Amendment: "No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened."

Which needs to be amended to add: "In times of Government shutdown, all federal elected officials will receive no compensation for the duration of the shutdown."

why should he negotiate? it's the law.

It is "the law", but he has already negotiated, with himself apparently, to delay, exempt or waive portions of the law where he found it politically advantageous to do so. And "the law" has no provisions that allow these unilateral executive amendments.

Not quite. Too many have become dependent on government programs. That doesn't mean most of the employees aren't needed. By paring down programs, you will pare down gov employees, but you can't just cut people and keep the same level of service. Also, you cannot lump all gov positions into the same group. National Security, Food Safety, aren't the same as gov grants to study the love life of frogs, or some other entitlement programs that are too large.

We are down about 2 million federal employees from the average of the 60's and 70's. Has government "service" suffered that much? Currently (2011 latest numbers I found), we are up about 200,000 - 300,000 federal employees since 2007. Are "services" that much better since then?

We have lost people in our Administration and it was nothing more than a brain-drain. The older, more experienced folks leave and they don't back-fill. We are in a terrible position where there is no fresh blood and technically savvy folks coming up the ranks. Those people (those that have the power to strip/(pardon the expression) rape the organizations), are so SHORT SIGHTED when it comes to hiring new folks it is pathetic, especially in the technology fields.

By reducing the work force in some agencies we are short-changing ourselves and the country and will pay dearly for it.

Sorry... I'll get off my soapbox! :mic:

Hey everybody! I am also worried about how long the shutdown will last and if it will change our plans.

I am an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA and still going to work but being told we won't get paid until the shutdown is over. They have also cancelled all vacation leave and we are being told there is no sick leave approved either. So if you take sick time for any reason or take vacation time you won't get paid for it. We have a fairly stressful job and this only makes it worse.

Our disney trip is the first week of December so I have a little bit of wiggle room. I am thinking of calling disney to see if they will give us an extension on when our final pavement is due.

Good Luck everybody
