Government shut down will affect you

:worship::cool1::banana::woohoo::dance3::cheer2:party::jumping1:

Well, I jumped the gun, this is just for another week....:headache:

Wait, is this for real?

I am so confused!

In my opinion this isn't over until it is completely signed off on. From what I heard last night this is yet another "band-aid" to keep the gov't running for another week.

I just want to thank everyone who has been posting on this thread. It has been nice to have people to hold hands and worry with through this.

That is true but apparently they are in agreement with what will be in the final budget which should be approved by mid to late week. They had to do another short continuing resolution though to keep the Government from shutting down; no one non-essential would have been permitted to work without it. IMO, this is different than the prior CRs because they are already in agreement on the final. Hopefully though there won't be any last minute snags or posturing by either side.

Yes. Thank you! It is always nice to see we were not alone even though each situation was different...not by much. We were all STRESSED OUT! I really didn't think they were going to pull it though and I won't feel completely at ease till it is final but definitely things are looking better. I appreciated all the links and info I received here too. It wasn't just people bashing each other because they didn't agree. I am so glad this thread was started. I think it helped keep me a bit sane :laughing:

This is my Dh's concern. Even though it will pass, they can still be furloughed if they have cut their budget in order to get it passed. He is still on the fence with our Disney trip.:headache: Until someone reads it and knows for sure what is in it, we just won't know.:sad2: He has been waiting for an email with an update.

You do not pay anything for Tricare Prime put of your LES. The only thing that comes out of his pay is United Concordia Dental. If you have Standard, you pay a portion of your medical care, but do not have to get referrals and can see whatever doctor you want.

Retirees pay a premium for Tricare.

Thank you for clarifying this. I was active duty when Tricare started and we never paid anything so I was wondering if this was new.

While I am happy that no one is going to go nungry with the lack of pay I am disapointed with the deal. Our country spends 76 in a year more then they take in. IF someone posted that on the budget board they would get nothing but flamed. I don't get why some people give the government a pass on their spending habits, even most in military and government jobs. The spending by washington has gott to stop. Yes evven if that means radical cuts in education,military, social programs and medcare. It has to be across the board and heavy no matter what secton of society it ticks off. All these lawmakers do wih their spending for buddies and to get votes from certain voter blocks has got to stop. This kind of spending will ruin this country and make the great depression seem like the good old days.

I wholeheartedly agree. Even alot of us military families would concede that there is alot of waste in the military too. Problem is that we spend ridiculous amounts of money on stupid stuff, then scrimp on things much more critical to our national security. There's also alot of repetative work in ALL departments. The problem made so glaringly evident during these last few days is that certain members of congress are willing to throw sections of the American people under the bus to protect entitlements for their base voting block, no matter how much better it would be for the country as a whole, and that they have no regard for their Constitutional restrictions as members of Congress.

This is also just a temporary stopgap, the next big battle will be over the 2012 budget. The people who were worried about a temporary furlough should realize that 10 to 25 percent of them will be permanently let go in order to get our finances in order and they had better start preparing now. The trough is empty.

Where did you get the 10-25%. There's a large difference between 10 and 25%. What people need to understand is that the cuts will not be completely across the board. There are totally useless agencies currently funded with federal money as well as programs that do not belong under the Federal Gov purview. The Federal government is doing things it was never set up to do. As for employment cuts, attrition (retirement, resignations) will take care of some of it. Also, new positions will not be added. Our agency has been working on this for over a year. There are people in jobs that were simply added to the budget over the last few years and aren't really positions so those are currently not being filled when someone leaves.

It depends on how much can be cut, not if but when and how deep. Look for 10 if the 2012 elections lead to a divided house like we have now, 25 if the GOP sweeps like the Dems did in 2008. Consider yourself lucky, many industries that used to generate the taxes to pay your salary have disappeared completely.
