Gotta vent - drunk /DUI driver

In regards to paying for alcoholics in forced rehab in lieu of jail time, there are some 2 year programs for alcohol & drug rehab that are self supporting. This was the option that the family had hoped for when my relative went to court for the two DUI's that she received. This is a wonderful idea, I think, so that not only do they receive alcohol treatment, but also learn new skills to enter the work force.

Treatment is a great idea -- but it assumes that the person WANTS help. Treatment won't do a thing for a person who doesn't want to live his life differently, a person who has no problem with what he's doing.

I do like the idea of impounding the car (and sell it and put the money into a victim's fund, even if no one was hurt in this particular traffic citation). Sure, the guy CAN go get another car, but it'll hurt financially, and maybe -- just maybe -- that'll make him think twice about risking the loss of that car too.

As for the 17th or so DUI, I remember reading once that by the time a person is caught /cited for DUI he's usually committed the same crime something like 40 times without being caught. So some people are driving drunk, it seems, pretty much all the time.
