I've been looking forward to this for years, but now I find it very stressful. So far we have broke a propeller(on first day out we hit a rock), got caught in seaweed and ran out of gas. (think I'm going to incorporate this into a book) Not to mention that I keep swaying back and forth hours after we get off the water. Has anyone else ever had bad boat luck and then loved it later on?:boat:

That's not bad luck, that's just typical boat ownership stuff!

That's why we make sure other people (family members and friends) own the boats and we go along for the rides. (And pitch in for gas, of course).

Hope it gets better!

Hello! Well as a wife of a guy that loves boating I would say I tolerate it. We sold our boat last year and he is planning on another one. I told him has to be 25ft, no less. I would like 33ft but too much $$$$.

I am sure your boat is HUGE for the ocean. We only go out on the lakes.

It will take him awhile to get to "know" your boat and figure out things. It can be lots of fun but it is an expensive hobby that is for sure.

So what kind of boat is it and how many feet?

You're learning about your boat, maybe once things settle down you'll like it. :)

Pretty much sounds like a typical day on our boat!

The portable battery jumper has saved us long hours in the hot sun...and the embarrasement of being towed (which we have had done)

We haven't forgotten to put the plug in....

You will learn what your boat's quirks are and you will be soon be loving it!!!

Sound like you guys need to be more observant! Seriously. In areas with rocks , there should be marked bouys "red on the right, green on the left" that marks clear boat channels. Maybe try a lake or river instead of Ocean? We've had different boats for 20 years and can't imagine breaking a steel propellor!

Oh gosh, I am going to print out your post and give it to my husband, who is convinced we need a boat.

Boats are a money pit.

Snoopy where you live - you do need a boat!

to all the people that answered so far - it's not a big boat at all, actually it's a small speed boat. We haven't really gone into the ocean, just a lake (where we hit the rock) and the CT river. We've tried to stay where other boats are because we are so new. Hopefully it will be less stressful once we get more used to it. I just wanted a little boat to ride around the lake and relax. I know I shouldn't be complaining at all. I'm just a little bummed. - should have took bsnyders way and made friends with someone with a boat. lol

Auggietina - we were towed (yes it was embarrassing - tourist were all taking our picture, so if anyone here was visiting CT last weekend yes that was me!) It was weird because the first day we went up the river four times and still had gas. The next day we only went up twice and ran out - I guess it has to do with the currents?

Your title made me laugh! I'm sorry you are having trouble, though.

My MIL used to say the two happiest days in a boat owner's life? The day you buy it and the day you sell it. I hope you have better luck.

I thought I would be brave and take the boat out without dh -
Here is a picture of us being towed after being stranded in the middle of lake for an hour.

lol - when the guy came up to us, he said so casually "you ran out of gas?" I figured it happens all the time, but he let us know that in his 10 years of boating - this was a first for him.

Oh the joys of boat ownership...Let's see:
The first fall we had it a family of squirrels moved in.
Then the boat trailer coming off of the hitch and swinging by its chain back and forth until we stopped and it came forward and ripped a hole in the gas tank. (trip over)
Good luck

Oh I forgot the best story!

When we bought the boat, we had the wrong size ball on the hitch.

The boat came off the hitch and right through the back of our windshield!

We hadn't even gotten it home yet!

But we LOVE our boat and have had some really great times, despite everything else!

My boss, who has owned several sailboats/yachts, always talks about how owing a boat is like flushing money into a big hole in the ocean! There is constant maintenance. Once, he sailed from California to Hawaii and then to the South Pacific and on to Austrailia. Just in one year's time, he "sank" around $300,000 into maintaining that particular vessel. I know because I am his assistant and pay the bills! He is experienced and has been sailing for 25+ years. This is a very expensive "hobby".

Perhaps you should look into a boating course.

By the way, it does take a while to "get your sea legs". There is always a period of queasiness.

I hate boats. Well boats themselves are fine, I have nothing against a boat. I hate being in a boat.

I'm not sure why. I love the water. But being in a vessel just above or at surface level makes me very nervous.

I was on a very large ferry once (the Badger, crossing lake Michigan), and that was fine. I think I'd like a cruise ship (I'll find out next year). Ships are fine. But I frankly don't ever want to go on a boat again.
