I got a weird email this morning saying the XX.XX had been charged to my credit card XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (showed the last 4 digits) and that I could contact a specific email address if I had questions. It said it was done through ProPay.

So I went to the website and thought, okay I haven't used PayPal in a while so maybe they changed companies. So I put in the login information I have for PayPal and that didn't work. So I knew that wasn't the case. So I hit the "Forgot Password" link and it comes up asking me for my email addy, social security number, and birthdate. I'm like - I don't think so. So I got out of it. I sent an email to the address asking what the charge was for because I haven't purchased anything using that and didn't authorize any charges in that amount (or in any amount at all).

So now I'm like what the heck. Do I go ahead and ask for a password to see the transaction and risk that this is a fraudalent operation or what. I don't want to go ahead with that but I'm wondering who the heck got my card number and what the hell is going on.

Has anyone used ProPay or know anything at all about them. I never open any emails that have anything to do with something like that (like the ones you might get from Ebay or PayPal) because I know better. But now I'm totally totally boggled.

Contact your credit card company now and see if any charges have been made.

It definately sounds like a scam to me.

I would contact the credit card company and tell them what happened. I would also contact PayPal as the company may now have access to your PayPal information based on your attempt to sign into their site with your PayPal information (if I understood you correctly in terms of what you did on the other site). Seems strange to me, too.

Good luck!

I have not made any online payments in, gosh, probably over 3 or 4 months.

Also, they would have gotten my information before I tried to login. Or they wouldn't have been able to send the email with my name in it. And it wasn't sent with my full name like I use with PayPal. It was "addressed" with my nickname first name.

I am going to contact my card company.

Hi! I don't know if this will help, but I do know about propay. I have an online business and that is what I use to process credit cards, since I don't do enough business to be able to warrant my own merchant account. What happens is when an order is placed through my site I use propay to process the card. The card owner does not have to have an account with propay, it isn't similar to paypal.
All the information requested for a lost password is a safegaurd since there is a lot of sensitive information linked to a propay account as well as access to an account holders $.
So, if you've ordered anything online recently that may be the culprit, also I believe it can be used in face to face transactions, like craft fairs, etc. So, unless you think you're credit card # has been stolen, be sure to email the address that was given and give them time to respond. Hope this helps!

Don't EVER give out your SSN on-line for ANYTHING!

pleakley - you helped me out tremendously.

I did have a Tastefully Simple party the other night and gave her my credit card to pay for my order. The first name didn't ring a bell with me at all. Now I feel really dumb. That is what it is then, that would be close to the amount that I purchased.

Thank you so much for explaining it to me.

And I agree Diane - don't ever give any social security info over the computer. That freaked me out when I went to find out what my password was. That's why I stopped at that point.

I've done it myself and I've also had customers who have seen the unfamiliar name on their statement and contacted their credit card company. With all the credit card fraud the cc companies are right on it, which is a good thing, but it is just a pain to straighten out if it turns out to be a legitimate charge.
I'm always doing something similar with my phone bill - I see a # that doesn't look familiar, so I call it - then I get to repeat the cycle next month - DUH!
I believe Mary Kay also uses propay.
Glad I could help, I know what a sick feeling that can cause!

Glad you go it straightened out. I know that it is sometimes confusing how charges end up appearing. I sometimes forget when a business warns me that something like this is going to happen and it scares you until you figure it out.

FYI... Creative Memories uses ProPay also...

I do not take CC yet ( I am a Tastefully Simple consultant) but I do know that we are supposed to "warn" our clients about that!! Glad to hear it was nothing bad, and just a slight oversight on your part! :sunny:
