Got Gingerbread House Frosting?

I want to make gingerbread houses w/ my kids, but don't know if regular frosting white frosting would work. Any suggestions?.....Thanks in advance all

Regular frosting probably won't work. It's the lighter properties in Royal Icing that allow it dry hard as concrete. Look on foodnetwork.com for recipes.

Regular white frosting may look pretty on the roof, but it won't hold the pieces of the house together. For that you need "royal icing" that is extra stiff and dries hard. I usually make it with meringue powder, but I think some recipies use egg whites. I'm at work so I don't have any recipes with me, but I'm sure a quick google search would help you find what you need. Good luck! We used to make these every year, but we usually just bought a kit. By the way, have your camera ready!

You need to use royal icing for gingerbread houses. It dries hard as a rock and keeps the house glued together.

If you look on the wilton site (wilton.com), they have a recipe for it. You can also find a mix, where you just add water in many craft stores.

yep...royal icing is needed in order for everything to stick together!

We went to a gingerbread house party at church yesterday. They had the houses prebuilt, and gave each family a bowl of royal icing to stick things on with. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough to cover the whole house. I realized too late that we should have just dipped the candy in and stuck it on instead of trying to spread it.

Anyway, we have big uncovered areas on the sides of the house. Would regular icing work to just stick candy on the sides, or do we need royal icing for that, too?

Regular frosting will probably only work on the roof, not on the sides.

Thanks all. I caught the gingerbread house show on the Food channel and wow, those houses are amazing! The show kind of inspired me, but also depressed me b/c who knows how our house will turn out. It might look more like a t-pee. We'll see.....
