Got attacked by dogs tonight.

 Just wanted to offer some hugs to you Monica! I'm sure it was a very scary moment...I'm glad that you, Lillian, and your furbaby were able to walk away from the situation without injury...

I know that if it had happened to me, I would have done the very same thing!

Thanks Brandi! It was very scary and I hope to never have to go through something like that again.

I talked to the Animal Control officer tonight and she took my statement. She also talked to a couple of neighbors who reported that the dog chased them down the street and attempted to bite them on two separate occasions. The neighbors did not report the attacks to Animal Control, so there is no official record of those attacks. However, this does show a pattern of aggressive behavior.

The hearing is tomorrow, but it will be a few days until the decision is written out and given to the owners. We won't be given a copy of the recommendations, which is a little irritating. I would like to know what the owners are ordered to do to train the dog.

As of now, we are still enjoying the blissful quiet of not getting barked at every time we go outside. :) I am so hoping that the recommendations include training the dogs to not bark.

Oh..thanks for asking. I forgot to mention that we took Bella to the vet and got her checked out. She's physically just fine. She's been much more needy and clingy the past few days,so I think she's feeling the effects of the attack.

Here's a pic of Bella with her security towel. :rotfl2:

what a sweetie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So glad you took Bella to the vet. Something similar happened to our dog years ago and she got a really small puncture wound, (which I didn't even notice) but then it became absessed and it was pretty serious. Definitely keep an eye on things...

Good thoughts and pixie dust to your family. It's a scary thing. My first furball (Lady) was attacked in the park. I was a lot younger then & a lot more aggressive. I was yelling at the top of my lungs and attempting to beat the other dog with a tree branch, while trying to protect my lady. I totally freaked out on the owner who kept apologizing for having his dog off the leash. I have never walked another dog in the park since and that was 30 years ago. I wish I had reported the dog, but didn't think of it until the next day. I never saw the owner or the dog again.

You did the right thing. If you didn't report it and these dogs attacked and hurt someone, you would never forgive yourself.

What a cutie pie daughter and sweet looking furball. My dog has a transition toy that she needs to carry out with her but doesn't always bring it back in. I am constantly picking up beanie baby type critters from the yard. Luckily they wash well.

Any news yet on what's going on with the neighbor's dogs? I hope everything is taken care of smoothly. What a horrible experience!~ It's great that everyone is safe though.

It makes you wonder about the living conditions of the neighbor dog and the negligence on the part of it's owners. Just sad.

Sorry to hear you went thru something so scary and glad to hear everyone is physically uninjured. Your pup is a sweety! :goodvibes

Take care :grouphug:

cheers,
:flower3:

Our neighbors across the street leave out their dogs at night sometimes... The dog often crosses the street. One night he got close to me so i hissed at him (yes, I did. Please don't think I'm weird now) it scared him a bit but he didn't back of so i began growling loudly and he went back to our neighbors house. If the dog ever attacks me i will fight him off visiously(sp?) and open the gate to let my 4 dogs out. They can handle the rest ;)

I read through the post, and am curious what type of dogs they were. They sound pretty vicious, and must be to attack unprovoked. Not to mention having serious temperament issues. To me, it doesn't sound like they'll pass the temperament test, but this does not necessarily mean death. Sometimes, they will take the dogs to a "half-way" home, and see if their behavior improves with more socialization and training. Here in NY, this is generally done with dogs that owners have mistreated (poor living conditions). Also, the dogs must be a desirable breed (some mixes too).

I feel bad for the dogs, because it's not their fault, but the owners. You still have to live next to them.

From what the OP described, I don't see anything other than regular dog behavior that the owners were irresponsible about handling. If the kids in their "pack" were out on the sidewalk riding bikes, they were responding to the new dog as a potential threat. They didn't attack people, they were dealing directly with the dog. In an ideal situation with good owners, the owners should have been in control of the situation and let the dogs know that the girls were not in harm and that that behavior is not acceptable. But they weren't there doing their jobs. It's all on the owners IMO.

I totally agree that the owners are the ones who created this situation. The dogs have attacked people in the past when the neighbors kids aren't around, so this wasn't just a case of the dogs protecting their pack. They have real aggression issues, due to being bored, outside 24/7 in a small dog run, lack of exercise and a serious lack of training.

I haven't heard anything about the status of the dogs, but I didn't expect to since it was a holiday weekend. We actually won't get notified as to what the recommendation is for the dogs as apparently the victims don't get that information. The only way I'll know if the dogs are returned, is if the endless barking returns. So far, it's continued to be peacefully quiet and absolutely lovely.

We have a walking trail in our neighborhood that has signs posted that animals must be kept on a leash. I can't tell you how many times I've been walking with our schnauzer and a huge dog has come running towards us (unleashed, of course) with the owner chasing behind saying "don't worry -- he's friendly". I always experience complete panic with my heart racing for several minutes afterwards. I just can't understand why people won't follow the rules...especially when we have an off-leash dog park about 1/4 mile away. If you want your dog to run free, just go down the road a bit and have all the fun you want without it being at my expense...okay, rant over!

Glad you and your 'kids' are okay!

The best outcome here would be that the neighbor, who obviously doesn't care about the dogs, would decide to relinquish them. Maybe she is enjoying the quiet as well ... then the dogs could move on to a better home and get some training.

You may have saved a life by reporting this

The dogs are back and while I'm happy that they are still alive, I'm bummed that our peace and quiet is gone. When I came home on Friday, the dogs were in their run, barking their fool heads off like usual. Arugh.
It doesn't seem like anything has changed. The owners are supposed to make some changes like training, regular exercise and reinforcing their gates. I haven't noticed anything new. Very frustrating!
I'll be calling Animal Control to report the non-stop barking.
